Writing your own songs..

Hi there, I write songs every now and then, but they almost never turn out good, do you write your own stuff? How do you do it? Are there things you should think about before trying to write some good lyrics?....

(Feel free to post your own lyrics here if you like..)

what do you play? i suggest writing a song before you write lyrics.

I've written some songs in the past. Try having a beat in mind and writing to it. Usually it's best if you already have the music done before doing the lyrics. If you don't play any instrument but you just want to write a song, start a beat in your head and write. Try making it rhyme and depending what kind of song it is, choose your words carefully. I'm not a pro but thats just my advice

Write only when your moved to do so,I only write when I'm really sad or angry. Also, try to write in general time signatures such as 4/4 so if you don't play guitar its easy for your guitarist to write something too it. Also, metaphors make for great lyrics. Using poetic language makes it better as well.

part of "Rebirth Of Dissonance"

This can't be it!
My immaculate hallways
are only charred remains
of a beautiful transition

This can't be it!
Cause you said always
and what about blood oaths
or divine inscriptions

Well am I dead?
It sure seems I am
Since when does your death
Mark the end of the day

Well am I dead?
I sure hope I am!
Since when does money
buy the hope you've saved!

thats only one verse of three, it made a f*cking awesome song and got a great response, but that was probably because of the harmony solo...curse our talented guitarist. My band, Sub Heroic, hopes to record in November...thats if we get 2000 dollars together to make 6 track EP thats mastered and all with a booklet and stuff...money...grrr

thats way to much money man. its all about diy. two of my bands released demos and full lengths and all together it was

100 for recording- the recording isnt bad either
50 for 100 cd cases
free for the booklets- get a friend at kinkos and anything is possible.

its really cheap as long as your creative, and my bands release looks just as good, if not better than most pro stuff. for 2000 you could get stuff done on vinyl.

eh good point...I'll look into it

Id have to Agree that you really have to write lyrics first, if you write the music first then lyrics it always seems that the lyrics dont fit or just sounds choppy. Im not saying that it cant be done but i think it is a lot easier to do lyrics first.

yeah i write lyrics and then get together with some mates and make a song out of it. write about stuff that your into and want to express yourself, that makes it easier for me. riseagainstrocks gave some good advice too. dont force yourself to write or itll sound ****

David Frost 09-16-2004 06:10 AM

if you write lyrics first, the music will lack. you will be confined to write to the structure of the words. because of that, it will not be as good. the music is about the MUSIC and not the words.

wacky 09-16-2004 06:20 AM

yeah but its more interresting when the words are good..
