With a couple of exceptions, the stuff I listened to a decade ago is still in my CD collection.

I am 18 now and i have had a few chnages in music tatse over my life. My music listning started at a young age wiht mostly what my parents listened to, Ac Dc, Triumph, Rush, Fleetwood Mac and such bands.

When I started into my own music adventure, I started where I think Most people start the top forty kind of stuff, mostly what ever was on the radio.


When I turned 14 i got my first ipod, and came music idependance, at first i was into the grunge rock scene alot, with big interest in Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, also STP, Nirvana, and pearl jam.

Then I went astray for a while i dont know why but for a good six months to a year i was into rap music and only rap, which today i dont understand why I was into it.

After that I came out of that scene, into the many sides of punk scene, falling hard for death cab, Alexisonfire, Something corporate, Jacks mannequin and other like these. Lately still heavily into such bands as these I have taken a big interetst into Jack johnson, Ben Harper, Matt Costa, Matthew Keraney, James morrison and others.

Tastes have changed dramatically.

90s: I was originally big into britpop and grunge, with my main musical influences proceeding right out of the book of Oasis and Nirvana. This remained throughout the mid-nineties though I incorporated a touch of electro too (as in club house and acid jazz). Come later 90s and my tastes had shifted to a sound more akin to the gloomier side of American Alt Rock.

00s: I lost interest in listening to music entirely and for a few years bought no records at all, hearing virtually no popular music other than what I caught by accident on the radio at restaurants/cafes etc. Finally my musical interests came back through listening to the radio while driving. This didn't form any tastes in particular. I then began listening to metal for a while, which is what really got me back into music. Eventually I realized that there wasn't much metal I really liked, so I turned my attention instead to indie music. To this day my tastes lie in the North American indie music scene, + a few select indie acts from other countries.



One strange thing: over the period when I didn't really buy/listen to any music, I continued to write songs/melodies in my head. Not really being conscious of the influences at the time, I can at this point reflect on those mini-compositions and realize just how much I've always been motivated by Nirvana and 90s Brit Pop. I even diagnosed myself as having been affected by Coldplay - that is, by merely hearing them on the radio. Scary.

when i was like 15,i was the most narrowminded person about music, all i would listen to was metal and punk rock, nothing else,and i would not even give anything even slightly pop or indie or anything else a chance, i just wouldnt listen to it.
now i still refuse to listen to most country, rap, or hip-hop/rnb, but i cant help that.
i now listen to lots of difernt things, i love idie and acoustic music, jazz and blues, classical, anything British, and even some elctronica, but not much metal anymore though, but still love the punk rock

when I was younger in the 90s....I was always pretty open and accepting of different genres but there was two main genres I would stick to....alternative rock...soundgarden, smashing pumpkins, creed, nirvana, etc. and I also listened to some rap/hip hop.....ll cool j, snoop dogg, westside connection, de la soul , a tribe called quest.

later on after my middle school and high school years I expanded my taste to tolerate many genres: country, jazz, classical especially for periods of time when I wanted to study/read a novel, trip hop, techno, drum and bass, industrial, symphonic metal, certain pop artists/bands, soul, funk , classic rock...I even went through a period where I isolated myself and listened to straight 80s music

There is some good Hip-Hop out there that does'nt conform to the stereotypes that the mainstream endorses heartily. I am not a huge Hip-Hop/ Rap fan but I still appreciate a good sound when i hear it.

My music taste has been all over the place really... unlike most others, I don't tend to abandon genres that I used to listen to and pass them off as crap, just because I'm currently in another music phase. It's difficult to trace and goes around in circles. Just be aware that, despite being in one phase, I'll still keep track of other music.

Pre-Music Stage: This was before I really got into music. My dad was an accountant and country musician so I received exposure to a fair bit of country, but he would also play rock music too. So in particular, I latched on to bands like the Beatles (poppy stuff), the Doobie Brothers, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Eagles etc. I listened to a lot of 50s/60s pop on the radio, but also listened to a lot of 90/00s pop shite. I remember my Dad giving me random country CDs and a Beethoven tape, presumably to get rid of the trash like Aqua. I liked Beethoven. It's worth noting that I played the keyboard at this point.

Music Initiate Stage - 16: This was about 3 years ago when I was 16. My friend gave me Blood Sugar Sex Magik (RHCP) and that was the first album I really became obsessed with. I also got into some other bands like Pacifier/Shihad, Sublime, Hootie and the Blowfish etc. On the electronica side of things, I was getting into Groove Armada, Concord Dawn, Chemical Brothers, Salmonella Dub, Daft Punk etc... Later in that same year, I heard Fade to Black and it really hit me. Metallica and Pantera were the first metal bands I got into as I seemed to skip the nu-metal stage.

17: I was getting into a lot of classic rock like Led Zep, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Tom Petty etc... I really became obsessed with metal and my tastes in that area expanded. I really kept an open mind to all metal genres, but particularly latched on to Opeth. I did check out more classic/alt rock, grunge and funk, but at a much slower pace. I started playing bass at the start of that year too. Later in the year, I started to get into jazz after hearing Thelonious Monk and Eddie Lang.

18: I started to garner an appreciation for progressive rock - I suppose it was the result of liking Pink Floyd and Opeth. I started to love bands like King Crimson, Can and Camel etc. I also became deeply interested in the 1967-72 psychedelic rock. Later in the year, I became interested in post rock/metal - bands like Mono, Caspian, Isis etc... I really branched out in all directions in that year... I listened to more alt rock and some indie, folk, rap etc... On the metal side of things, I particularly liked doom.

19 (first half): In the first half of the year, I started to get into punk, emo and a bit of industrial. I also rediscovered some pop I used to listen to and listened to a lot more jazz. Further rock expansion. This was the period where I started to compose too.

19 (second half): This is my current period. I've been getting into post-punk, ambient electronica, film/game soundtracks etc. I am deeply into prog rock again and I'm becoming increasingly interested in avant-garde music. I feel a big classical phase coming on too.

I'm looking at taking up piano again and delving more deeply into composing.
