Drastically changed over a course of not so long. I only started listening to music around when I was 13. My favourite bands were U2, System of a Down, Billy Talent, Nine Inch Nails, Queens of the Stone Age, Ministry, The Mars Volta and In Flames. Eventually, someone introduced me to Alkaline Trio and with that came some Hot Water Music. As well, got me into The Misfits and I think the Dead Kennedys I have came from that. Around the same time I listened to some Black Dahlia Murder and a band called The Agony Scene.

Not sure when, but somewhere down the line, I think in the later months of 14 I heard some CTTS. It was either CTTS or Converge that was the first hardcore sort of band that I listened to. I listened to As I Lay Dying a bit. Sometime after I turned 15 I was listening to similiar stuff to CTTS on Last.fm and eventually came across Venus and Bacchus by Saetia. Ever since then the majority of music I've listened to has been emo and screamo, which I've been listening to and adding more of to my library when I come across it.

They years are sort of rough, I don't exactly remember when I listened to what, but yeah.

Well, it all started when I was 5 years old and heard Cotton Eye Joe.

I mostly ignored music up until 6th grade, in 4th grade it was all Star Wars soundtracks and assorted crap from the radio... Bullet with Butterfly Wings was the first rock song I ever liked.

Then in fifth/sixth grade I really started listening to rock, some of my favorites were Kid Rock, Limp Bizkit, Metallica, Linkin Park, System of a Down, Disturbed, etc. Through seventh and eighth grade I basically followed that trend, I started listening to power metal, Tool, gothic metal (Type O Negative and stuff like that), Iron Maiden, etc. I guess it wasn't until my freshman year in High School (or maybe a bit before that) that I discovered punk, mostly seventies stuff and bands off of Fat Wreck (Me First and NOFX and all of those bands). I also got into ska around that time.

Then in 10th grade a stranger came into my life and handed me No Thanks! The 70's Punk Rebellion, which more or less is the greatest compilation ever made and blew my mind. Not only did I start listening to ALL the classic punk bands but I was introduced to proto-punk and post-punk simulatenously... I was now listening to Pere Ubu, The Stooges, The Pop Group, Wire, and all that good stuff. The Stooges and Velvet Underground came pretty quickly, and at some point I started listening to Frank Zappa, which blew my young impressionable mind.

From there? Post-punk led to no wave, shoegaze, noise rock, noise, industrial, etc. etc. At some point I started listening to avant-jazz and hip-hop. At some point I decided I should listen to some current bands so I checked out the whole indie scene, which also led to all this New Weird America. More avant-garde stuff, drone, minimalism, japanoise, etc. I can't keep track of it all... at this point I really don't focus on specific sub-genres I just check out bands that sound cool...

So yeah, I'm eighteen now and just graduated from High School, and most of my memories do seem to be linked to whatever music I was listening to at the time.

The only music I listen to that has stayed constant, is Northern Soul.
I grew up with it being constantly played around the house, as a boy.

When it comes to music I try to be as open minded as possible.
In fact I make a conscious effort to.

It's the main reason I visit MB.

At a very young age, I was introduced to the likes of U2 and Third Eye Blind by my mother, and everything from Muddy Waters to Kyuss (i.e. Blues for the Red Sun ftw), to Django Reinhardt by my father.

I did not start developing my own musical tastes until about 8 years old. I had then discovered The Ramones, Sex Pistols, New York Dolls, Richard Hell, and so on. I became infatuated for about 3 years until I started a sort of resurgence of rhythm and blues, and soul. I was utterly devoted to Syl Johnson, and Blind Lemon Jefferson.

Then, a miracle happened. After so many years of hating and not recognzing the amazing genre of rap and hip-hop, I had begun to feverently listen to any rap I could get my hands on. NWA to Public Enemy, and of course, the whole Stones Throw arist family.

At this current point in time, I am digging on anyone who can play a guitar with skill and grace. Heavily rotating in my life are folk artists such as Noah Georgeson and Devendra Banhart, to The Fall Of Troy, and Andres Segovia.

This thread has been pretty interesting to read. I'll try to keep mine short.

Up until I was about 8 I was mainly into the stuff that my parents listened to. I was introduced to loads and loads of 80s pop, 90s stuff like Massive Attack and Everything But The Girl and George Michael and some more interesting stuff like Bjork. As an 8 year old I found Bjork fascinating.

During primary school I started to get really into music but I was still only listening to my parents' music and the stuff I heard on the radio. I started to find lots of favourite bands and I got my first CD (I was stupid and refused to move on from tapes for ages).

When I arrived at secondary school my father was a big Green Day fan and I started to get into them. At my age Green Day fans seemed few and far between and my love for the band got me in with the cool crowd... ahhh, school and its subcultures.

I moved a couple of years later and my taste in music changed again. It was nu metal's big time and I was really into the whole thing. I pretended to hate pop music to look cool and I developed a pretty bad attitude towards music (as young teenagers often do). I discovered a lot of bands that would eventually get me into metal, though.

Once I'd got over the whole 'pop sucks' rubbish I started to get into bhangra and went back to electronic-based stuff and I wanted to learn more and more about the music coming from Canada.

A little bit later I found last.fm and in those days we had no radio stations or anything like that... I used to look at profiles for band names I'd never seen before and then have a listen.

That's about it, I guess. This is me now. I still like all of the stuff I liked in the past 20 years and I'm on the internet searching for more.

I started out liking rock and pop and didn't even know who Tupac was until I move to California. (haha...guess that's what you get when you grow up in a "Smallvile).

I got into hip-hop a lot when I moved to California but don't like it as much nowadays - doesn't seem like it has as much artistic merit as before. So, I'm back to listening to alternative. I have yet to grow a inkling for country or opera.

I started listening to old stuff like The Beatles.
Then when I was about 12 I decided I was to cool for it and started listening to junk like Linkin Park/ The Used/ Blink 182.
So shameful.
Then I tried getting into Metal to seem more hardcore.
Ha ha.
Now I'm obsessed with Indie, Folk and some softer Rock.
Also, I love The Beatles again.

I have changed a lot. As a young teen I was very into grunge, 80's metal and classics such as the beatles and Led Zeppelin. Was very much against most things Rap. I have changed greatly and now love all music and am open to hearing anything.
