I think all along the watchtower - Jimi Hendrix. originally by Bob Dylan and Hounds of Love - Futureheads. originally by Kate Bush. |
well i'm just gonna say the album renegades by RATM...every song = great cover..
|
oh yeah and try a little tenderness by the von bondies...alongside with c'mon c'mon their best song....
|
Yep, I agree with "All Along The Watchtower", also Jimi's "Day Tripper" (originally sung by The Beatles, of course)...
And another Beatles-Cover: "Because" by Eliott Smith (American Beauty OST) |
"day Tripper" covered by Bad Brains is great as well.
|
And I like "Streets Of London" by the Sex Pistols
|
Hurt - Johnny Cash
|
All of Oasis's songs - originally by the Beatles :D
|
a band called day of contempt did a "hardcore"- ized version of the cures "love song". it was pretty good for what it was.

elbow - independant woman
|
^ That's a superb cover. It's a major pisstake of whoever did the original (Beyonce?), showing up the complete laziness of modern pop.
Dave Matthews Bands live cover of All Along The Watchtower is pretty good, as is Nightwish's cover of Walking In The Air. Ben Folds does a pretty good cover of Tiny Dancer, and Dispatch do a good live cover of Piano Man. Dave |
mrs. robinson - lemonheads
whats going on - a perfect circle |
^ i was just gona say mrs. robinson by lemonheads (orig. by simon and garfunkell obv.)
and did anyone read in NME the top greatest covers? |
|
You all should check out www.secondhandsongs.com . Its a database devoted to song covers, good for figuring out who has covered a particular song, when, and who wrote the original, how many times a song has been sampled, what songs the sample it appears in, and a whole bunch more information regarding covers. Great resource!
|
both the white stripes "jolene" and "i just dont know what to do with myself" are good covers.
|
Nirvana- The Man Who Sold the World
David Bowie being the original of course. |
well, duh. yeah, that was a good cover. Rage did the whole of renegades pretty well.
|
^Agreed. Another entire album full of good covers is Metallica's Garage Inc. Granted, their original material and pre-haircut songs are best, but they did a kick ass cover of Hank Williams' "Tuesday's Gone". (It even had John Popper of Blues Traveler on the harmonica.)
|
Yeah Whisky in the Jar is a great cover.
|
where did you sleep last night-nirvana is one of my favourites and
tainted love by marilyn manson is cool too.if they haven't already been mentioned. |
2! Telegram Sam and Ziggy Stardust by Bauhaus. Blows both original versions out of the water. :hphones:
|
Take this job and shove it (Johnny Paycheck) - Dead Kennedys
Orgasmatron (motorhead)- Sepultura Redemption Song (bob marley) - Joe Strummer |
Manfred Mann's cover of Springsteen's "Blinded By the Light" is pretty good.
Grand Funk's version of "The Locomotion" is easily the best one. I've always thought the Beatle's cover of "Rock and Roll Music" is a lot meatier than Chuck Berry's. Just my opinion. |
Silent Night - The ****ies (I haven't got a clue)
Here Comes The Sun - Nina Simone (beatles) Guns of Naverone - The Specials (Thompkin/Webster) |
I didn't realise The Di, ck, ie, s would get blanked out.
Wicked Game - Him (me thinks) originally - Chris Issak |
Probably "Big Yellow Taxi" performed by Counting Crows. Even better than Joni Mitchell's original.
|
My favourite covers are:
Joe Strummer and the Mescaleroes-Redemption Song (Bob Marley) AFI-Head Like A Hole (NIN) The Clash-Brand New Cadilac (Vince Taylor and his Playboys) Stretch Armstrong-Express Yourself (NWA) Goldfinger-Rio (Duran Duran) |
what!!!!!
Quote:
That has to be the worst cover version of any song in history. Big Country versions of Don't fear the reaper (blue oyster cult) Paranoid (sabbath) Rockin in the free world (Neil Young) Prairie Rose (roxy Music) and the afore mentioned Big Yellow Taxi (Joni Mitchell) seriusly rock. |
all along the watchtower-jimi hendrix.
|
oh and the man who sold the world by nirvana. =)
