elbow - independant woman

davidMC1982 06-08-2005 03:41 PM

^ That's a superb cover. It's a major pisstake of whoever did the original (Beyonce?), showing up the complete laziness of modern pop.

Dave Matthews Bands live cover of All Along The Watchtower is pretty good, as is Nightwish's cover of Walking In The Air. Ben Folds does a pretty good cover of Tiny Dancer, and Dispatch do a good live cover of Piano Man.

Dave

ScarletStarlet 06-08-2005 07:19 PM

Imonlydancing 06-09-2005 11:21 AM

Fenixpunk 06-16-2005 10:21 AM

Nina Gordon - Straight outta Compton - wow.

SATCHMO 06-16-2005 11:45 AM

You all should check out www.secondhandsongs.com . Its a database devoted to song covers, good for figuring out who has covered a particular song, when, and who wrote the original, how many times a song has been sampled, what songs the sample it appears in, and a whole bunch more information regarding covers. Great resource!

Sneer 06-16-2005 11:51 AM

both the white stripes "jolene" and "i just dont know what to do with myself" are good covers.

coffeeshop 06-16-2005 12:13 PM

Nirvana- The Man Who Sold the World

David Bowie being the original of course.

Imonlydancing 06-16-2005 01:22 PM

well, duh. yeah, that was a good cover. Rage did the whole of renegades pretty well.

Zenith 06-16-2005 08:01 PM

^Agreed. Another entire album full of good covers is Metallica's Garage Inc. Granted, their original material and pre-haircut songs are best, but they did a kick ass cover of Hank Williams' "Tuesday's Gone". (It even had John Popper of Blues Traveler on the harmonica.)

coffeeshop 06-17-2005 01:41 PM

Yeah Whisky in the Jar is a great cover.

shandapanda 06-17-2005 01:55 PM

where did you sleep last night-nirvana is one of my favourites and
tainted love by marilyn manson is cool too.if they haven't already been mentioned.

right-track 06-17-2005 02:36 PM

2! Telegram Sam and Ziggy Stardust by Bauhaus. Blows both original versions out of the water. :hphones:

Fenixpunk 06-17-2005 03:25 PM

Take this job and shove it (Johnny Paycheck) - Dead Kennedys

Orgasmatron (motorhead)- Sepultura

Redemption Song (bob marley) - Joe Strummer

jr. 06-18-2005 08:22 PM

Manfred Mann's cover of Springsteen's "Blinded By the Light" is pretty good.

Grand Funk's version of "The Locomotion" is easily the best one.

I've always thought the Beatle's cover of "Rock and Roll Music" is a lot meatier than Chuck Berry's.

Just my opinion.

Dezzy 06-20-2005 09:24 AM

Silent Night - The ****ies (I haven't got a clue)
Here Comes The Sun - Nina Simone (beatles)
Guns of Naverone - The Specials (Thompkin/Webster)

Dezzy 06-20-2005 09:29 AM

I didn't realise The Di, ck, ie, s would get blanked out.

Wicked Game - Him (me thinks) originally - Chris Issak

neckbreaker 07-05-2005 05:36 PM

Probably "Big Yellow Taxi" performed by Counting Crows. Even better than Joni Mitchell's original.

AprilMay 07-06-2005 03:42 AM

My favourite covers are:
Joe Strummer and the Mescaleroes-Redemption Song (Bob Marley)
AFI-Head Like A Hole (NIN)
The Clash-Brand New Cadilac (Vince Taylor and his Playboys)
Stretch Armstrong-Express Yourself (NWA)
Goldfinger-Rio (Duran Duran)

irishpunkfan 07-06-2005 05:32 AM

That has to be the worst cover version of any song in history. Big Country versions of Don't fear the reaper (blue oyster cult) Paranoid (sabbath) Rockin in the free world (Neil Young) Prairie Rose (roxy Music) and the afore mentioned Big Yellow Taxi (Joni Mitchell) seriusly rock.

boo boo 07-06-2005 06:18 AM

all along the watchtower-jimi hendrix.

boo boo 07-06-2005 06:30 AM

oh and the man who sold the world by nirvana. =)
