I would like to see Megadeth cover "Free Bird".

I am not joking. You may like Tim Buckley's song better, but I don't understand why are you so outraged because of this cover and how is it so disrespectful. It's a totally different take on the song with a different sensibility which I like.

By the way, it's totally legitimate to be disrespectful when you cover a song. Have you not heard of Residents covers?

TMC were disrespectful by their attempt at blatant mimicry. The Residents were trying to go about it that way, where as TMC just failed at being parrots. It sounds dated, down-tuned for commercialism, everything that Tim Buckley's version doesn't sound like. It's not a 'totally different' take. It's an attempt to cash in on EXACTLY what Tim did. It ranks among the worst covers of all-time. I don't have anything against covers when they aren't so drenched in selfishness.

I've never felt this cover was an attempt at blatant mimicry. For me it is a different take. It doesn't have to be The Residents type of approach, when you almost can't recognize the song, to be considered a different take.

And I've never understood this criticism that something sounds dated. What does that even mean exactly? That the song is a product of its time? Since when is that a bad thing?

I don't care what motivation This Mortal Coil had when they did this cover - be it cashing in and commercialism or a genuine artistic inspiration. All I know is that I love this song, it has a certain magnetic power to me. When I hear it, I can't stop listening to it. Maybe it's because I first heard it in "Lost Highway", one of my favorite films. I don't know.

By the way, this discussion is pretty pointless. You hate this cover with a passion and I like it very much. We're obviously not going to change our minds.

It's a common one, but...

can't find a decent version on youtube, but 'Smalltown Boy' by Jose Gonzalez is another favourite...

My favourite is probably Otis Redding's cover of "Satisfaction" by the Rolling Stones. It's probably been mentioned by someone, I've only recently heard it and I do think it's better than the original.

YouTube - otis redding - Satisfaction - Otis Blue

I also love Devo's cover of this song, actually.

Who does the original cocaine blues? I thought it was Johnny Cash but that doesn't sound like the Folsom version.

I think Reverend Gary Davis did the original.
