I think that it helps get music, especially new music from new bands out to people, to get them listening to it. People are typically reluctant to go out on a limb and buy something new that they are completely unfamiliar with. If bands want to make money, they can go on tour.

To me, it comes down to the band. If they don't mind their song being traded, then they should have the right to open up their catalog to P2P trading. If they'd rather people buy their track either digitally or physically, then they should have that right too. This is, of course, skipping over any assignment of rights to the record labels or publishers (trying to keep it brief), but ultimately its their music. Let them use it as they see fit, don't make that decision for them.
