Songs that have hidden meanings

Does any one know any songs that have hidden meanings? I like talking about this kind of stuff.

Sparky 05-07-2007 07:48 PM

you mean metaphors?

where to start...

What do you think the song Hotel California means?

The Shining, but eh, maybe he's just talking about a bad relationship in which he's scared to leave because he's so attached to his girlfriend.

These are the Days by Sugarland has a hidden message. But only the Sugarlanders who know what they have been through in the past year or so will know what it means.

If a song has a hidden meaning, that means the author hasn't disclosed it, which means it's simply fan-based speculation, which means essentially any song can have any hidden meaning, amirite?

It all depends on how liberally you approach the meaning of the word 'hidden' in this circumstance. I would still say that things like hidden tracks constitute being a hidden 'meaning', especially when CD's were still the meanings through which you listened to music. Digitized files on computers kind of killed off that hidden track thing though, as you could easily see that there was so much running time left.

Phish - Joy

This is from their 2009 release, and is written about Trey's sister, Kristy Manning, who passed away earlier in the year. She did a lot of charity work and such through Phish and other outlets, actually leading Trey's The Seven Below Arts Endeavor and passed after a struggle with cancer.

Makes the song that much more moving, in my opinion.

Also, not too thinly veiled a hidden meaning, but:

Queen - Death On Two Legs (dedicated to......

The song is actually written by Mercury and "dedicated to" their former manager, Norman Sheffield, who was screwing them over horribly.

Opiates.

I interpreted "hidden meaning" as something I didn't pick up on right away. Something I only got after listening to the song a dozen times or so.

Let it Snow is the most blatant sex song I've ever heard. I don't know if that makes it a hidden meaning but it certainly is hidden to old ladies, and Christmas spirit people.

MoonlitSunshine 11-27-2010 02:29 PM

I don't know about that, they could be preparing for a rousing game of tiddlywinks.

As for hidden meanings, wasn't there this big thing about a lyric in "Another one Bites The Dust" by Queen that sounded like "It's fun to smoke Marijuana" when played backwards?
