Your opinions on labels

What do you feel about band labels such as "emo" "punk" and god knows how many metal and hardcore?

I feel that labeling bands is almost neccesary but that shouldn't restrict the music they play. If you pick up a Taking Back Sunday cd your probably gonna say, these guys are emo. If on the next cd they sound like Figure Four your gonna say they sound like a hardcore band. I think labeling cd's is very good and bands should only be called emo or hardcore or alternative once they put out enough albums to find their niche.

I also think labels are neccessary because if you tell a friend about a band and they ask what kinda music is it and you say hardcore, well there is so many different styles of hardcore and while all contain similar elements their are very sharp differences as well. I think sub genre's in the hardcore scene should be limited too: Math, Metal, Grind, Mosh, and Old School.

post your opinions please.

I think every music store should be lined up A-Z and that should be the only way of categorizing records. Labelling acts is, and always will be, a total waste of time and effort.

I think that labels can be both good and bad. they help to categorize music so people who enjoy bands of a certain style can find more in that genre. however, many titles can be very misleading... such as a math band that is actually a hardcore band that uses alot of scales or an emo band that is just poor pop punk with bad vocals.

In my experience, if someone says to me they were listening to a new band the other day, I immediately ask "Who do they sound like?" rather than "What kind of music are they?" because, as numerous threads in the past have shown, EVERYONE has a different opinion on what different labels mean, and it just causes arguments.

excessive labelling is just ridiculous. but it isnt all whimsical. to an extent it is extremely helpful, but when it gets psat that point, it is just irritating and pointless

it is quite dumb to have them in styles and genres, instead of just from A-Z which would be alot easier for us. Some people might have different idea's on a bands style. Some might think a band is punk and another would say aww nah its emo...see thats where the confusion comes in, no one can determine wat a bands genre truly is
