And then I realized... like I was shot... like I was shot with a diamond... a diamond bullet right through my forehead. And I thought: My God... the genius of that. |

I kinda feel that way, Crowquill has a lot of pull on this site (which is completely understandable, he's nice, rational, and is on and posts a lot of non-spam related posts).
Also I think Elliott Smith is some indie icon, and since indie is the big craze he gets lots of votes. I don't think he is the best band though, The Fall, Black Sabbath, and David Bowie (i'm ignoring Bright Eyes as a choice) have contributed much more groundbreaking, technically advanced music, which I believe constitutes a better band. We're talking the BEST band in the scope of all bands. And a indie guy with a unique voice is the best band? I just don't get it. I hope I made some sense in my ramblings.

It isn't. Mozart is amazing, Led Zeppelin is amazing, Black Sabbath is amazing, The Beatles are amazing, etc. The bands that revolutionized music are amazing because they revolutionized music. This indie singer did not create enough original, influential material for him to be amazing.

Although I couldn't keep myself from voting Black Sabbath, I'd much rather see Bowie take this one, after all, he kept things interesting, changed his sound, and made groundbreaking albums, whereas Elliot Smith just recorded a bunch of music that I find uninteresting, derivative and bland.

everyone accept the fact that we think Elliott is an amazing artist. As said before..this is a personal preference poll.

I don't feel like quoting everyone, as said before this is about personal preference. Why would I vote for Black Sabbath? I don't like their music, I don't even like metal so their influence doesn't even mean much to me. They do nothing for me, Bowie doesn't do a thing for me and neither does the Fall why should I vote for them?
I think elliott is amazing and I thought that post was dumb because heres what you probably thought 'if I name drop a bunch of untouchable bands no one can disagree with me!'. I find Elliott way more amazing then Sabbath. It kind of annoys people get so uptight about this, if it was Bob Dylan instead of Elliott no one would've complained even though Elliott did more new and innovative stuff then Dylan ever did, but hes a 'classic'. The majority of people have only heard either/or and just dismiss it as a typical indie-folk album, thats fine but you take stuff like From a Basement On the Hill and Figure 8 with songs like King's Crossing, Shooting Star, Junk Bond Trader etc, paticularly King's Crossing it shows he isn't some some folk singer, he experiments and is a very talented musician seeing as on most of the songs he played all the instruments for the most part and its not simple stuff. I'm not trying to be an annoying tool fanboy and go LOLZ LISTEN TO THE DISCOGRAPHYYZ but I think its unfair to dismiss an artist when you've probably only heard one album and that album wasn't even one of his best. As for everyone voting just because I am, that could be true for some but Elliott is usually high on the musicbanter lastfm charts so I doubt that could be said for all. |
