I also find Andy Rourke's bass playing is criminally underrated. Unhappy Birthday in particular, the bass line is the best part of the song. I think he has a unique style and should be given much more credit than he does. That's because it's James Jamerson on bass for most of that album.

And Andy Rourke is a pretty good bassist... but like most bassists, he gets shunned to the side.

^ Lol. Claypool is in every other post. I think Flea is an admirable bassist, but he gets overshadowed by John's guitar a lot. He definitely has some groovy bass lines and is probably the reason their so funky.

I find there are a few good female bassists (in part because there are so many more female bassists than guitarists or drummers). I'm not talking about Kim Gordon or D'Arcy Wretzky (though they were decent). I think Melissa Auf Der Maur is a good bassist, even in comparison to other male bassists.

Kim Deal gets a mention from me simply because it's her basslines that are one of the main reasons i love the Pixies so much.
