Anybody familiar with Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band? Some really deep stuff here. Know of any other legendary figures of rock? The ones that shaped drastic movements in the industry.

I think it's taken me a good three years to get my head around Trout Mask Replica. Amazing album, amazing artist. Apart from that I've only heard a few more songs here and there (that promo for Iced Cream For Crow is quite something)

now here is a thread I can jump on. Captain Beefheart is amazing. I love all of his music. If you have heard his stuff with Zappa, it is pretty amazing. I am on my 14th year of being a Beefheart fan. Accidentally discovered him when I bought Zappa's Hot Rats.

I do like Captain Beefheart alot more then Zappa... I don't know why but, maybe it's becuase of that awesome hat.

I still have trouble listening through an entire Captain Beefheart album. Though I did once during a really ****ty school assembly out of boredom.

Troutmask, definitely an all-timer for me, crazy man avant-garde blues. Brilliant lyrics, who else would be mad enough to record 'Dachau Blues'?
He fell off in the early 70's with the Spotlight Kid etc IMO, went a bit easy. Never been able to get into that stuff although there are some standout classics (Upon The My O My, Her Eyes Are A Blue Million Miles)

The second album Strictly Personal is hideously overlooked aswell, it's the one I recommend to anyone looking for an easy introduction to whatshisface and his Magic Band. I think for an out-of-print 'lost classic' Lick My Decals Off, Baby is pretty well acknowledged.

As for the second Magic Band line-up I love Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) but I love Ice Cream For Crow even more. Don definitely got his **** together in the end.

Personal fave and highly recommended is also a 90's-issued live record I'm Going To Do What I Wanna Do (Live at My Father's Place 1978). My highlight is during a recital of 'Well', Beefheart stopping to tell a guy to quit nodding his head, and I quote: 'Cut it out man, this is not in 4/4 time. Some things are sacred'...

Anybody have an opinion on Bongo Fury, the 1975 Zappa collab? I always judged it as a Zappa live album that happens to feature Beefheart...

EDIT: his paintings are amazing too. Top 3 abstract expressionists dOoD!

I'm a major fan of 'Bongo Fury' and see it as a lot more than just a Zappa album feat. the Captain. Firstly, the inclusion of dons spoken word stuff (Sam with the flattop showing bringing us the entire album's title) seeps a lot more beefheart into the album that if he were just a guest. Let's face it, without him it would be just another live zappa album. Don't get me wrong, there's no fault in live zappa albums but add Don and it becomes something special.

I've just recently gotten into Beefheart, and I'm really starting to love Trout Mask Replica.

I found that this documentary on him was pretty interesting. Not sure if people here have seen it, but its worth posting I guess: Part 1 of 6. The other 5 parts are found pretty easily in the related videos section.
