I really like the BBC doc. It's an excellent insight on how Beefheart fit into his time.

But if you want an inside and in-depth view of Beefheart, please watch Samuel Andreyev's Beefheart-related videos. They are seriously the most insightful content I've seen on Beefheart. Granted, I've never read any of the major publications like the 33 1/3 (just remembered about the PDF I have, gotta get on that) or John French's Through the Eyes of Magic, but I have a feeling that everyone who has an inkling of interest in Beefheart and even those who don't like him will get a lot from watching these videos.

I SAID THAT ANYBODY WHO KNOWS ABOUT CAPTAIN BEEFHEART SHOULD WATCH THESE VIDEOS

Bill "Zoot Horn Rollo" Harkleroad Interview Pt. I
Bill "Zoot Horn Rollo" Harkleroad Interview Pt. II

Really, really important addition to the Beefheart cannon imo. Zoot Horn Rollo is insanely articulate and has some great insights on the music industry in general as well.

Frownland will also be getting to that book after having finished his recs.

Hopefully the positive response to Andreyev's videos push him to create a lot more of them. Dude knows his stuff and Beefheart has a lot of stuff.

^ Yeah, you'd think they could at least have checked the spelling before they published the book.

^I listened to it for the first time the other day. Honestly, it seems to me that the fact that most people find it so bad/weird at first is simply because most people don't listen to much jazz or 20th century classical or other progressive music. While I didn't grasp it in full (obviously no where near on a first listen) it doesn't seem to me to be particularly difficult. For example, the day before I tried it I listened to Boulez' second piano sonata and found that to be MUCH more difficult as far as hearing what's going on/general harshness, and I find much of the Xenakis/Stockhausen/Berio (and I've hardly listened to supposedly more difficult composers like Ferneyhough/Carter/Babbit/Boulez) I've heard to be more difficult as much of their music is more mercurial, in the sense that it is constantly changing and one can't, while listening, bask in fairly consistent polyrhythmic patterns.

Of course, we're all different and so some may indeed find TMR to genuinely be exceptional in this regard, but it seems to me to be just an expressive and fantastical album that I'm looking forward to getting to know.

Over five decades, Trout Mask Replica has proven incredibly durable, still sounding as bracing and radical as any rock music since. That’s even clearer in this remaster, sourced not from the decayed original masters but from less-worn backups.
Seems like we were just talking about something like this...

Very cool!! Thanks for pointing the direction!
Would be neat to know more of his Merrel Fankhauser times. Did he share the UFO and/or Mu beliefs of Fankhauser, for example? But yeah, really interesting interview nonetheless.

Also noticed this Youtube channel has extensive interviews with Zoot Horn Rollo and Drumbo aswell. Will listen to them tomorrow, most def. Nice.
