Are you kidding , those first 2 White Stripes albums sound like wholesale Headcoats rip offs.

Although I wouldn`t be mad enough to say Billy Childish is better than Jack White.

the stripes were firmly within the realms of delta blues on their first two albums, adding a rock twist, childish was content on releasing garage rock albums that in all honesty were nothing special.

As I said Jack White is the better musician , and Childish isn`t exactly the best when it comes down to editing his work as he seems to put everything out he writes.
But that still doesn`t change the fact that when I hear the 2 bands the guitar sound is virtually identical , the vocal delivery is virtually indentical , Jack White goes out and uses Toe Rag Studios to record in using Holly Golightly to record backing vocals (Something Childish has been doing for over a decade).
So yeah , you can hardly blame me for finding simularities there.

Urban hatemonger gave an example and now I will tell you mine, which they aren't exactly the same, but that bluzzy sound you hear came from them (I believe.) Look at Lynyrd Skynyrd and look at their music. Yes they do not have the punkish sound the stripes had, but the bluzzy (wow I am really lazy today) rock sound came straight from them. See this wouldn't be so bad if The White Stripes experimented more with their music, but they didn't. Thats why they sold out. They also sold out because they probably could have done something with more talent involved, but they didn't so there is my piece of the pie.

Wait you're calling White Stripes sell outs? You do realize that The Beatles sold the rights to their songs?
Yeah, but at least they chose to do something with music and influence bands. Se in classic rock times people still understood what good music was so something popular in that time is ok. Popular in these times = not good. My only exception may be Radiohead or Tool, but they aren't that popular. Also I am mostly talking about popular in America because I haven't really seen what is popular in other countries.

You can't choose to influence bands. White Stripes are less popular than Radiohead or Tool and sound nothing like Lynard Skynard.

I don't see why any of this matters anyway. The Beatles are going to take this poll.

If you make music that is innovative, you are bound to influence bands. The White Stripes are not less popular than Tool. They are a bit more popular. Radiohead is less also and even if they were more their talent is not argueable.

what a load of bull. so the stripes have 'sold out' because they havent changed their sound? Firstly, you need to familiarize yourself with the meaning of 'sell out', secondly, saying they haven changed their sound shows how little you know. the difference between their first and latest album is there for all to see. And lynyrd skynyrd? EH? their is a big difference between blues and southern rock, the stripes do have influences yes, the stooges, son house, leadbelly etc, but their sound is unique. Your going to have to do alot better than bloody lynyrd skynyrd. Alot of bands have a 'bluzzy sound'. Thats not the be all and end all of their music. And over here for sure the stripes are a lot more popular then tool.
