If an artist never does a live show because they aren't there to do live shows than thats cool, but if you're going to be playing live then you really want to do this part well.

I reckon at least by never playing live you never give the fans much of a reason to think your a crap artist, as long as you've got the midas touch in the studio they're happy. But playing live is risky in the sense that if your not harry flash than it can be quite damaging no matter how good your albums are.

I think the two are completely separate experiences. I don't particularly like Be Your Own Pet, but live they were fun as hell just because the crowd was actually getting into the music. On the other hand, there are a lot of bands who make great CD's but who rely heavily on "studio magic," or who dub, use samples, etc. and who would lose half their essence live.

And then there are crazy hermits like Jandek who don't really seem to be making their music for anyone but themselves and don't really care about touring. But they're generally in the minority.

So you can like a band because they kick ass live, or because they're great on CD, or both, but I don't think it's fair to write a band off because they're great in one aspect but not the other.

Exactly BUT..if they are good in both aspects...they deserve more respect.

But being a good live band doesn`t improve the material that`s recorded.
If you are the greatest live band in the world it makes no difference to me when I put the CD in the stereo.

You may as well say making good music videos make a band better.

Right but my point is that some bands I probably won't ever listen to on my stereo but I'll jump if I get the opportunity to see them live. Like Be Your Own Pet or Rammstein. Be Your Own Pet because they're a bunch of 18 year olds who know how to work up a crowd and have a good time on stage, and Rammstein because their live show involves self-immolation and that's just always cool to watch. Obviously, I don't rate either of them very highly as musicians but I still like them as bands.

Thats a fair call and I agree, though have you ever heard a band for the first time live, and thought it was so bad that you were put off checking out an album? I'd say bias's do occur like that, and vice versa for hearing a really poor studio album thus not wanting to pay a few bucks to go see them at your local, no matter how good the show might be.

If the first impression is that strong sometimes you probably would pass over what could be a really good thing.
