Locals Only - represent your scene
I straddle the border between LA and Orange counties, so what constitutes "local" is sorta up for interpretation.
My first pick is Long Beach's Wild Pack of Canaries. I caught them by complete accident when they played with my friend's band at a little free show in Pomona but I was totally blown away. I really dig this guy's reverby guitar lines and the vocals are really catchy in an atonal sorta way. Next is Stay Cool Forever, who literally live around the corner from me (in beautiful Pomona, CA). They make nostalgia-dripping synth-pop built around interlocking vocals loops. They've been getting a decent amount of blog love lately, and a self-released EP is really close to completion. Finally I'd like to point your attention to another Long Beach band, Vibra Optic '73. Don't be fooled by the duo set-up, these guys are making some of the most authentically funky jams out there today, armed with nothing but a drum kit and some meeean electric piano. And as if they couldn't be any cooler, they've been known to cover "Lady Day and John Coltrane" live. |
Ah, bit late but I like discussing music venues. There's a couple of amazing ones in Liverpool.
My favourite venue in this city has to be.. Kazimier. Saw Foals here when they played a few dates at the beginning of the year upon release of Total Life Forever.. absolutely stunning, first time I'd ever been into this venue http://img841.imageshack.us/img841/1047/kazimier.png Korova, awesome little basement venue. Saw a few good acts here like Be Your Own Pet and The Bronx. Not many pictures but this one is the best I could find. http://www.musicomh.com/music/gigs/g...s/pop-levi.jpg |

I live about an hour away from Baltimore, which has an incredible music scene. There is a plethora of indie/experimental bands in the area. Some of the more notable ones are Dan Deacon, Double Dagger, Ponytail, Weekends, and Wilderness. I'd like to note that Baltimore's scene is incredibly varied. You've got experimental, electronic, punk, art rock, hip hop, folk, ect. I really do feel privileged to live relatively close by. Can't wait to actually live in Charm City. (Oh, and the famous Frank Zappa himself was from Baltimore. =])

Although I live in a city with only about 22,000 residents, we have a very active theatre and music scene around here. While a lot of the bands that come out of here aren't really my cup of tea, there are a few real gems.
Genuine Junk Band (Roots, jam, funky) I see them in concert every chance I get. They're my absolute favorite local band. GJB MySpace Bedtime (More of an indie thing) I've seen them play quite a few times, and they're pretty good. Practice Session Soft Pain (More indie as well) I've seen them play with Bedtime a few times, and a few solo shows. They're not bad. Soft Pain MySpace Murderous Geese (More on the punk side) Murderous Geese MySpace Ritch Collins Three-O (Strangeness) Ritch Collins Three-O - Breakin' Up Ice Neverly Brothers (Jammy, Zappa and Dead influences) My theatre friend Roger Hagley (Neverly Brothers) with Genuine Junk Band And dozens and dozens more. These are just some I've seen before. |

Wintersleep, Sloan...
Feist was born around here somewhere... This is an apparently legit band called Thrush Hermit. You wouldn't know from this clip. One of the band members eventually became this: This isn't exactly current but these are some of the only bands people outside Nova Scotia may have heard of. |
Best friend's (guitarist) band... Magic Thrust. |
Rye n' Clover, great folk/singer songwriter out of the town I'm going to school in. Also just an incredibly nice guy. |
Ah man these guys were going to open for Lightning Bolt until it got cancelled but they are still great.
BIRTHQUAKE! These guys are beginning to get really popular in the Salt Lake area and i really enjoy them so check them out and let me know what you think. SPELL TALK |

Your Favorite Local Bands Thread
I thought it would be cool to have a thread dedicated to bands new or old, on the cusp of breaking through or flying lightyears under the radar, from poster's hometowns. Just drop some names, some vids, a description, whatever. It'll be cool, I promise. Tell your friends! I've tried this on other music forums and it's never taken root, I'm hoping it's not a sign because it seems like a real rad idea. Hopefully this one will flourish!
I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. Scenes from SF, Berkley, Oakland, and some south bay cities (IE San Diego) are kinda all mixed together over here. As a fan mainly of punk rock, my list is somewhat unvaried. Here's some bands that kick ass from my area: Big Kids: post-hardcoreish, mathy, emoish, alt-rockish, pretty heavy and sick from Oakland. Summer Vacation: lo-fi as **** emo ala Algernon Cadwallader, Snowing... nothing new but still good. They are from Oakland. Tony Molina: This guy's really awesome. I saw him open for Joyce Manor a while ago and was immediately hooked. (SUPER) short songs, fuzzy, riff-y, heavy guitars with awesome corny solos and laid back 90's slacker-indie vocals. He has some intense hc projects too but they're not as good. If you like Dinosaur Jr. YOU MUST CHECK HIM OUT!!! Dissed and Dismissed is one of my favorite records of this year! He's got a new EP coming out Oct 2013, too! He's from SF. He has better songs but this is the only one on youtube, :/. Shannon and The Clams: Lo-fi, reverb-laden homage to obscure 40s-60s pop. Shannon's (ex-Hunx and his Punx) a babe and a real great singer. From Oakland. Wild Moth: They just released a new album that's really good. They also have one (or two?) EPs. The S/T EP I have is good but 'OVER, AGAIN' is pretty fantastic. They cover a lot of ground, some songs are shoegaze-y, some songs are gloomy post-punk-y, some are hardcore-ish. They don't really commit to anything in particular and the result is a pretty unique sound. Sf... FIDLAR: Stands for "**** it dog, life's a risk." They're from LA, which... meh... but their music (mostly) is pretty good. Garagey punk with some skate punk ties. Cheap Beer is arguably one of the best drinking songs in punk and the music video kicks ass. I! DRINK! CHEAP! BEER! SO! WHAT! ****! YOU! Jawbreaker: 'nuff said, except that to be fair they did have some roots in New York(?) This song seems underrated compared to staples of their discography. Why can't I swear? Censorship, on a website about art?! :( |
RENO
This Computer Kills plays highly technical screamo/hardcore punk, their only album is one of my favorites. Folky, bluegrassy, kinda punky, DIY music from Last To Leave. 7 Seconds are from Reno. So are Fall Silent. And Iron Lung. ...And Gehenna Blackened thrash metal that I don't particularly enjoy from Blasphemous Creation. Awesome stuff from Elephant Rifle. Went to high school with these guys, think they're kind of lame. Some bros of mine. More bros. Even more bros. Cat Jelly | CAT JELLY |
I guess I'll count people that were born in my town too, because it really doesn't have much of a music scene. (It doesn't have one at all really)
Jenny Owen Youngs Jenny Owen Youngs: YOUR APARTMENT - YouTube Probably the most well known artist born in my town, really good folk-pop. She was just on the revival tour this past spring. Tawny Peaks Tawny Peaks - Ambiguity - YouTube Twinkly emo. Daido Loori Daido Loori - Sacred Ground - YouTube Screamo. |
thanks to the internet no band really has to be local anymore if they were smart they would post there music online for the entire WORLD
|
Echo Movement are a really good group of chill dudes from my area. They've been around for awhile too.

Might just be me but, Mondo, a lot of your videos aren't showin up :(. I have a hard time with metal but Gehenna seem pretty cool, the vocals kinda had me laughin a bit though. I had no idea 7 Seconds were from Reno, for some reason I always associated them with 80s east coast straight edge HC. Shows you what I know. Is it strange that I know who Jenny Owens is because my mom's girlfriend is a huge fan? I've been getting into some more acoustic stuff lately, did enjoy! And I've been meaning to up my reggae collection, sounds like another addition with Echo Movement. |
I grew up in a town of 60 people. My closest music scene was at least a few hours away, Minneapolis. This is my favorite band from the Twin Cities.

Local Musician Scene
Local musicians.
We all have experienced our share of them, ranging from underground wunderkind to your friend's cousin's landlord's band that would play in the garage of your neighbors's nephew's girlfriend-at-the-time. There is a feeling of gratification when one is "in the know" of a group of lesser-known musicians, especially when they are easily accessible via a quick walk or cheap cab ride to the nearest venue. Why is ordinary so extraordinary when witnessed firsthand? Or when witnessed before the masses have access? What is this feeling that locally composed music forges in our minds? Share with us the talent you have local experience with, that you want the world to be made aware of. What should your town be known for in this modern age of music? |
There's not much of a scene for anything here are far I know, but I feel like the people at the weekly jam session class thingie will get something going at some point.
I went to Nelson yesterday, and saw some graffiti saying "Hardcore punk save my life" and "Misfits!", so there is maybe a hardcore scene there? |
Where is this here that you refer to?
|
In San Diego we have a thriving jazz community. Some of my favorites are pianist Joshua White and drummer Nathan Hubbard, I've seen both multiple times.

I currently reside in Nashville, via Chicago. Whilst living in Chicago, I had a multitude of opportunities to see live music. I never latched onto a specific scene, rather I kept an open-mind and sought out any noise that appealed to me. A majority of the noise I found was rock-oriented.
I saw a show for Ezra Furman & the Harpoons at a personal favorite venue, Double Door, in Wicker Park. Opening for them was tour mate, Tristen (Tristen Gasparadek). I was unaware at the time that Tristen was from the town of Lansing, where my father grew up. I believe she had already transitioned to Nashville at this point but that is neither here nor there. Both bands were touring to support new releases, Mysterious Power (Ezra) and Charlatans at the Garden Gate (Tristen). My buddies and I arrived somewhere in the middle of Tristen's set and I was mesmerized right away. Her voice has something of an angelic quality, an innocence of sorts. And she is very attractive to boot. It was only her and her husband playing guitar with drum loops on keyboard. This was the first time I heard 'Doomsday'. Wow! What imagery! What sounds! How possibly could you follow this? 'Baby Drugs'. That is how. Quote:
After a smoke break and some beers to calm my pounding heart (and a brisk conversation at the merch table to confess my sudden, undying love for this woman), Ezra appeared onstage in a glory of manic depression. He kicked it off with 'Mother's Day', featuring a resounding, crowd-led FUCK that was heard throughout the neighborhood. For the entirety of this set, I lost 5 pounds through sweat and blood (limbs swing when the band swings). This was the most emotionally energetic show I had witnessed to date. Everything that came from this lanky dude with a crazy spark in his eye was absolutely genuine. I somehow managed to move around at such a frenetic pace while balancing ever so delicately on his every word. This was a show that will most definitely make it into the stories I tell my children, nieces, and nephews. After the show, my entire group went next door to the bar where Ezra and the band made an appearance. I was able to buy him a beer before they piled in the van to hopefully charm and excite someone new to his sounds in another town. The problem with where I live is that every band seems to be so far underground that there isn't too much of a scene to be had. Me and a few friends are trying to start up a collective of all artistic people we can find.

In Dundee we have a small but ambitious music scene largely overshadowed by Glasgow's, Scotland's largest city, just two hours away. There are a small batch of bands that play the same two or three venues. These come in two categories; local upstarts which vary from dreadful to good, and overflow from the Glasgow scene which are almost always great.
Local bands can be small and unknown to the rest of the country or quite successful, though still holding a soft sentiment for Dundee. Glasgow bands also come in both categories too, though even the smaller ones still seem more matured. Just the other night I went and saw three fantastic bands, two from Glasgow and one Dundonian. Halfrican who I was familiar with from a compilation put out by a Glasgow venue, Bar Bloc+. Great energy, but all three are firm in that category. ****hawks are the local band. Deathcats were the third and the headliners, playing their penultimate show. A really great band with bounds of charisma. Very fun, and one of the best local gigs I have ever attended. Nice people too, the people that attend these nights.Vladimir are another good band, getting a bit bigger. Having supported The Fall in Manchester and The Twilight Sad. Other bigger Glasgow bands that have come through more than once are Paws and The Amazing Snakeheads. Both respectable. Paws are incredibly capable on record but lacking in live talent. Snakeheads are the complete opposite, bland on record but really a sight to behold live. Front man Dale Barcley snarls on stage like an angry dog, and is truly unpredictable. One minute staring lustfully at an audience member the next down on his knees wiping away tears as he sings. I enjoy the scene, to an extent. Though I am a bit of an outsider not knowing the bands particularly well. |
