Maryland/Pa/D.C./ Va

I live in Maryland but am often times playing/going to shows in Pensilvania, D.C., and Virginia.

In Maryland the venues are hit or miss. In Baltimore Sonar, powerplant, hammerjacks, and various others are main stays their and bands are constintly trying to get a regular gig spot at Sonar. Sonar has a good crew, management, and employees in all of Baltimore, from what I have seen anyway. Towson has one venue alot of bandS hit the The Richer Theatre. If try to avoid going their, it's small (600 max) and sound is horrid. When I played their no one could do sound to save their lives, I could only hear drums and guitar, it's pathetic.

D.C. Is my favorite. Clubs their are great and are very personal, I try to get to a show their 2 time a month (I live 2 hours away). My favorite clubs are The 9:30 club and The Black Cat. I played both, and both have A+ everything. The scene is cool too. Alot of Post-hardcore and indie, because when you play in D.C. you feel as if Fugazi literly owns the town. What can I say? I love Fugazi.

Virginia for me is lame. The scene is full of hipsters and music elitists. Every person that played In a band in VA, that talked to me, is an innovative mix between Animal Collective and My Bloody Valintine. This is richman Va, I havent went as far as that city. The only cool thing is that you can smoke inside in VA because no one cares about the smoking laws.

Minneapolis, MN USA:

Great hip-hop/rap don't really have to explain Eyedea and Abilities, P.O.S. Atmosphere and others-(also a lot of ****ty attemps at another lil' wayne)

Indie/Experiemental- has a smaller format but we have a local band named Why? thats pretty good.

Electronic - Pretty much just a ****ty rave scene. No one goes there for music people just show up to munch some rolls down and forget about life.

Modern Rock - There are A LOT of bar bands in Minneapolis. Most of them sound super ****ty very main stream but there are some dimonds in the rough. Down and Above is an amazing Rock/Alternitave band from Minneapolis.
And obviously the Hold Steady...

Country - ....

Punk - There are some stabbs at hardcore punk here and there. Some people are heavily influenced by Canadian punk from Manitoba (Propagandhi, Comeback Kid) but no one really stands out.

other than that you'll find terrible metal and terrible post-hardcore/screamo bands.

My town has lots of small amateur bands and they all play somekind of pop-punk or metal.
There is way too many metal bands here and they are all pretty much crap.

Wow...is all I can say about alot of the musicians that have come out of this area of southeastern Ohio, most of them are just as good as the big dogs are, one band that has their own music video, songs on Itunes, etc. is Bobaflex, you should check out there video BobaFlex E.P. avalible on iTunes on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads Also are a few local cover bands that do the classic rock thing, Blitzgrieg & Bad Habits are a few of the best ones to name, I dont know what it is about this area but I havent even started to name all of the outstanding musicians that are from here, guitarist, drummers, vocalist, etc. you really have to be on the top of your game if you want respect as a musician in this area, of course I am just to damn old and have no more grand illusions about doing a 40+ song set in a cover band anymore, I will do a 15 to 20 song show once or twice a year opening for other bands, its just to much hard work in a cover band, most people think that its all fun and parties and its not to say the least, its hard damn work! espeacially hard for a vocalist.

Well, Melbourne is apparently the cultural capital of Australia, and there is a fantastic and diverse music scene down here. I've been to every main city in Australia and NZ but I have to say I've never come across a more artsy/musical city than Melbourne. A lot of live music is usually seen in bars and pubs, but it's not the cliched 'pub rock' that was really prevalent years ago. The venues in Melbourne are also really quirky, which I love.

I think Melbourne has an amazing music scene and when I go out to catch some live music I am hardly ever disappointed by the quality of bands I see! We also have a load of quirky little alleyways, not creepy alleyways but pretty ones with cafes and bars and street performers. It's great.

Again? Nice.

I miss it. DC has a crazy music scene. There was a good amount of indie pop bands similar to AC and that sound, lots of experimental electronic type stuff (more in the vein of Melt-Banana, straight up experimental music is huge in Maryland), dream pop, and I hear a massive rap/hip hop scene that I never saw too much of. There's a lot of alternative rock bands popping up everywhere, good and bad. And of course, it wouldn't be DC without the punk and post hardcore artists.

As for my current local music scene, well... that doesn't exist. But if all goes as planned, I'll be stationed about half an hour from Seattle after this :D Sub Pop and ****loads of indie rock come to mind when I think of Seattle, it should be amazing if I make it there.

In Louisiana, as far as electronic is concerned, most of the clubs around here are big on Electro House. Seems to be the trend as of late, although you can still find Drum & Bass, but its mostly been taken over by Dubstep.
I haven't heard breaks blow up since I lived in Florida about 8 years ago.

Metal always stays a mainstay in certain Louisiana niche. Rarely hear punk anything anymore. Mainstream alternative is pretty much a regular in your every-day bars and all that.

Indie seems to have taken off a lot with locals... a lot of unknown acts coming out and doing stuff in that area. They usually do their thing at bars that have open mic nights.

HipHop will always be HipHop. Never died down, just changed. But most of your regular joes listen to that horrid club shit.

Everything else is in pockets and bursts.
Aside from the obvious mainstream stuff, which is listened to by virtue of it being mainstream and all, it's really a matter of being in the right place as far as what's dominant. I sorta like that, because it's more than just a single character about the place you live. It's multi-dimensional. I like exploring that more.
