I agree. I considered Metallica a horribly overbearing band of macho pasturing egomaniacs. A sad waste of time for the talented Kirk Hammett.

If you play in a successful band, then you're skilled, and I'm sorry to say but you must be a fucking moron to think otherwise. Maybe they might not be some innovative mastermind genius on whatever they play, but they can attract a crowd and sell records, and that takes skill if you ask me. Even all these mainstream/radio/pop/whatever acts that you'd call "soulless" or "uninspired" or that are marketed just to bring in money, they're still skilled, and you can't say they're not just because you don't like them. The Metallicas and Nickelbacks of the world all have band members that are skilled at their respective positions, and truth be told, there's a good chance they're all better than anyone and everyone here. What room do you have to talk? Let's see you sell out arenas worldwide, year after year.
I imagine that is an unpopular opinion. |

Besides most Jazz albums, I find more and more reasons not to listen to anything before the year 1980. I wouldn't say music sucked back then because that's insane, but my interest is almost completely gone.

When I refer to skill, I'm talking about technical ability on an instrument or in songwriting.

So are you saying you don't like any pre-80s songs that are played in plug?

I totally feel it, but I've always believed that people in these bands still have a fair amount of skill, technically and musically speaking. They appeal to a very wide mainstream audience, who aren't gonna be excited to hear an artist that lacks any skill whatsoever. Wasn't putting down lesser known stuff, just saying that I believe all popular artists have musical skill. Chad Kroeger isn't really an ultra awesome guitarist, but he can still play, and write riffs, and perform said riffs, which takes great skill.
But you know, tons of under the radar guitarists have way more skill. I don't know what I'm trying to say.... I'm not that smart. |
