He was pretty innovative in the industrial lounge noise post-blues department.

Innovated FROM those types of music.
That's the thing you seem to be missing.

People always say I talk about race to much but this is kinda why. I often see people always saying certain white acts innovated things that they did not and its very troubling and frustrating. People really think this man innovated Jazz and blues? Really??? I will never understand it.
I like a lot of the more softer vocalist as well. like Smokey Robinson or Marvin Gaye for example. But I like powerful vocalist at the same time that can really project and have body to their voice also.

I kind of see your point this time concerning the race card, more so than any of the other times anyway. But it's no more bias than saying white people can't dance or play funk and soul music.

I personally never let race cloud my perseption of the music itself. It really in my opinion very rarely overshadows the music itself in any constructive way.

I thought this performance was interesting and I liked the way he used his hands while singing but I can not get into his singing. His singing style as well as music is not innovative. People were doing it before him.
Well, kudos to you if you think you will be getting into that kind of music.

I don't think I can handle him more for 15 seconds. I stop that video at 4 seconds. I didn't like him when I first heard him and I don't like him now. I don't see the point of running an experiment to see if I can handle a whole Tom Wait's song or even if I can listen to him for more than 20 seconds. I don't think I'll ever be a Waits fan.

So you do talk about race too much because you ignore what people are actually saying to plug in your buzz topic. Look at the videos I posted earlier, it has blues and jazz roots but it's still very much its own thing. Here's another for you

This is totally not true. Someone made a comment that he was innovative and he is Jazz/Blues artist. So naturally when I listened to some random songs of his I made the judgement call and they did not sound innovative because there have been previous artists before his time that have done it and they just so happen to be African Americans. How is that creating a buzz? Originally, no one really specified what specific songs he innovated or the genre he innovated so how am I suppose to decipher between people saying he is a innovative blues/jazz artist versus he innovated his own style? I don't know much about him

This song is interesting, better than the others I have listened too. His singing sounds better on this one. I don't know much about him so I will just accept this for now until I research more. What is the name of the genre he innovated? What is this style of music called if it is not blues/jazz?

I have never heard of him before so naturally if I pick some random songs on youtube I am going to base it on that.

He is definitely not a good technical singer in any shape of fashion but you don't need to be in order to be a good singer.

The way his voice sounds when he sings is an acquired taste I guess. I really can't get into it much.

There have been singers that sound the way he sound but I think better singers if that makes sense.

Jimmy Smith also has a similar singing style but sounds better.

I am trying to be open minded and learn about him because I have never heard about him. I am not sure if I can get passed his singing myself because its not pleasant sounding.

No that is the thing that was not clearly specified. I understand now, thanks.

So being an innovative jazz artist means that you invented jazz? Haha okay buddy. Before playing your hand of race cards maybe next time you can do some research on Wikipedia or something because an artist's more out there stuff is rarely their most popular. That's not to mention that it was you who brought up innovation in the first place, why would you expect anyone to specify which songs were innovative if the topic hadn't been brought up. Lazy research mate. There's no specific name for Tom Waits' music, it is very much its own thing while still having elements of jazz and blues. Being a part of a genre doesn't make it impossible to innovate within that genre or introduce others into it like Waits did with polka, industrial, etc.

I'm also well aware of the similarities between Waits, Satchmo, and Howlin' Wolf. That's just one of the jazz elements that are prominent in his music, but it doesn't detract from the areas in which he introduced new ideas.

You don't have to like him, but innovation is innovation. I can't stand Eugene Chadbourne, but I will admit that the electric rake is pretty damn innovative.

c'mon boo I did not say that

I said that the songs that I listened to were not innovative so I did not agree with people calling him a innovative artist.

I don't know what specific songs of his are considered innovative or not because I don't know much about him. I believe anybody would have made the same assessment. I listened to a couple of random songs of his before I made it and even looked at some of his performances.

I am not sure why you are so defensive when I said I accept that the song was innovative because I don't know much about him and have to research more. I don't know much about him to really say I dislike him which is why I am asking you questions about him since its clear you obviously know more about him

That particular song sounds different but the songs I listened to on my own were not innovative. I am not sure why you are holding that against me when people here have said not all his music was not innovative.
