im not opposed to playing a solo if it fits in the song im opposed to stunt guitarist that want a solo in every song just to show off.
Steve Vai comes to mind. I can't sit through most of his newer stuff. He's a legend, and Passion and Warfare was an outstanding album, but I bought "Where The Wild Things Are", and I haven't gotten through 20 minutes of it. I couldn't. Too much wankery.

I don't usually listen to bands that rely on solos all the time..
the only artist that never bores me with his solos is Django reinhardt.

Granted his musical is instrumental so his solos are a must but even though his solos are technically very difficult they are always melodic and they always merge with the song arrangement seamlessly

For Jazz, that's pretty much the signature for solo artists. Frank Gambale, Stanley Jordan, Alan Holdsworth, Pat Metheny, and a whole host of others all have that same quality.

Thnx for the references it's only recently im starting to appreciate Jazz i used to hate it precisely because of all the solos and how progressive it is.

I was kind of assuming the whole riffs vs. solos thing was with regards to rock-related music. Jazz is a completely different animal.

Madonna is better than Michael Jackson.

I can sense it. I can feel her coming. She is near, I do not doubt it.

I didn't think this until I saw him live, but Jandek is a fantastic guitarist. He can really tear it up.
