Depends on how you define controversy. If it's music that actually causes controversy then I'd definitely disagree. By the nineties people were far too jaded to be bothered by most things that could actually crawl out into mainstream pop culture. And if an artist knows that his/her/their music isn't going to be seen by the light of day then it's not really very controversial for them to do it. As far as I'm concerned Cannibal Corpse isn't nearly as controversial as Elvis, simply because nobody outside of metalheads was ever going to be very aware of them.
If your definition of controversial is just how unorthodox something is, then I think just about every decade has had music as controversial as the last. It's just that the most controversial music is generally so far out of all but the most obsessive weirdo music fan's orbit that it's almost impossible to hear.

What I actually mean is how people keep claiming old music is better than new and by old they mean 60s, 70s, and 80s.
As for breakthroughs, nah that's not where I'm getting at. I'd reckon by 2000 people did get jaded and nothing really surprises anyone.

I wouldn't call that opinion unpopular. I'd put it more along the lines of clichéd and annoying.

I'm not actually sure how unpopular this opinion will be...but I heard Hotel California (the album) for the first time about a year ago...and I thought to myself..."This artwork is great...but the album itself has actually been rather overrated."
