I don't know if there's anything that ups a song's cool factor quite as much as a harmonica.

Going back to why I hate guitar solos, I think the positioning of the guitar solos really needs to be changed. I'm tired of it being verse, chorus, verse, chorus, solo, chorus...
Like if I was in an 80s thrash metal band I'd say "the hell with that f*cking bland-ass, unipsired sh*t" we're having the solo either at the beginning (like the VERY beginning of the song, like it opens with the solo), or at the end with a fade-out or we'll work in something fancy like the song abruptly ends with the solo. Or even more fancy, the solo fades into another song. Just talking about this actually makes me like solos again, that's how much it would be better for me if they were positioned differently. |

^ Agreed. Although it doesn't really bother me when it follows that format, so much as it particularly impresses me when there's a deviation that turns out well.

My perhaps unpopular opinions.
Metalcore rocks. Post- 2010 music is awesome. And the most controversial, music from this range of 30 years 1990-2020 > 1960-1990

You could have an unconnected, more elaborate section before your verse/chorus comes into play, your verse/chorus would just need to be a bit more interesting/complicated than usual in order to follow it and the solo would really need to outshine the opening section. Or you could end your solo with a short recap of the chorus or verse and immediately jump back in to finish it. There's plenty of ways to alter the layout of the structure to make it interesting but it still needs to remain functional otherwise you'd be left with a weak albeit interesting track that won't be able to stand on its own. |

I think I'd have to agree with that last one. Considering the former has many clones of the latter, it can only be superior.

@wpnfire
That's why i initially didn't like Guns n roses it seemed Slash had a solo in every song. Now i kinda like his solos, now i can hear the melody in them where as before all i saw was a dude showing off.. At least for me it all depends who is doing the solos and if i like his sense of rhythm, it's more about the timing and the melody for me not showing off how fast or how technically difficult it is.
