Oh man, I need to listen to this ASAP. Bennink plus Sonic Youth sounds good enough already but throw The Ex in there and **** yeah now we're talking.

Prepare yourself for this!
Unpopular opinion #1 Quote:
all guitar riffs > all guitar solos. Very few, if any exceptions for this. Unpopular opinion #2 All heavy metal guitar solos are awful. Very few, if any exceptions for this. I do like guitar solos, none of them are from heavy metal though. |

I think it's gotten a lot better in the twenty-first century, but during last few decades of the twentieth century, guitar was really fetishized and viewed as the lead instrument, which I find annoying. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy guitar. I'm just saying that its long-lasting prominence among other instruments is silly. Piano, trumpet, sax, violin and any number of other instruments are perfectly worthy lead instruments.

Power metal guitar solos are basically the exact opposite of a guitar solo I like. I like to actually be able to hear the notes being played in a guitar solo.
"All Along the Watchtower" by Hendrix is one of my favorite guitar solos because it goes all over the place, but it's not this constant overbearing force like power metal solos are. It pauses, changes direction, slows down, speeds up... Come to think of it, pretty much all Hendrix solos are great. If you count "Machine Gun" as basically one long guitar solo, that might be my favorite solo. But yeah, zero love for most heavy metal solos. "Tyrant" by Priest is the only long, complicated heavy metal solo I legitimately like. |
