I'm not entirely sure if it was just him or not, but Kurt Cobain was a genius songwriter. The riffs he made for Smells like and Come As You Are not to mention basically everything from In Utero, are top-notch.

By "lot of harmony," do you mean songs with an actual lot of harmony, or Def Leppard-eque stuff where bands dip their vocals in 3-man harmonies more than fat kids dip their bagels in cream cheese?
