As for Amy, aren't we discussing the matter of something being an unpopular opinion based on the general "music nerd" circle? For example, if I said "Oasis are underrated" I would mean within this community and similar ones, not generally.
Please find me someone on here that doesnt think Back to Black is a great album

There is just no good arguments that can be made that shes underrated

I wasn't saying it to defend realtalks stance, as I definitely don't see Amy as underrated in this community.

I said it to counter some of the arguments in favour of Amy not being underrated. For example, citing Grammy wins. Hardly anybody on here takes that sh*t seriously in the first place, so don't conveniently use them to support your argument.

I consider Oasis to be underrated, but I wouldn't say "They haven't even won a Grammy!" to support my opinion.

Grammy wins just suggests critic and public support as well, it just slightly bolsters the argument. I don't necessarily take Grammy wins as the be-all end-all of which artists are good or not or anything like that. It's definitely an accomplishment. I mean, if I ever won a Grammy I'd be pretty damn happy :P

Also I'd like to say that maybe you guys were discussing how overrated/underrated an artist is in general. In that case, Grammy's are fair game.

So because she was a drug addict who died because of it, she's underrated? I don't get how you got from A to B on this one.

I think if the general perception is that you're good, and that you're known, then the last thing you'd be is underrated. In fact, I think that'd literally be the definition of being "properly rated" is that you're rated by many, and that those ratings are generally favorable.

I'd put her more in the overrated category, because her music wasn't all that great for all of the accolades she's received.

Michael Jackson never called himself the "King of Pop".

Elizabeth Taylor called him the King of Rock, Pop and Soul at an award show and after that award show fans starting calling him the King of Pop as well the media.

And he is underrated as a songwriter and as an overall artist. Most people cite him as just an entertainer/dancer when he was more than just that.
