I haven't posted ion here for a little, so...

-Dubstep has potential to be the next big musical thing, like how rock'n'roll and rap music did

-Hip-hop is far more creative and interesting now than it has ever been

-ICP has pretty good/creative production, also they can be pretty funny

-Adam Levine is a good singer, it's just a shame that M5 sold out as hard and fast as they did

-Rhythm is probably the most important part of music

It's an extremely fashionable thing to like if you're a musician and it has quite a snobbish little scene over here in SF.

Agreed on all but 2 of these -

Levine relies on auto-tune and I can't see Dubstep mess with the diversity of rock or rap.

Does it? I usually think of free jazz as being a style that exists mostly in the past. Who are some of the bigger names from the SF free jazz scene? I'd love to check some of it out.

Don't know too many names and none big, it's a live scene and there's a lot of duo's and trio's. Scott Amendola plays it and has a bunch of students that are in acts that play it.

Then there's fusion acts that play fusion heavily doused in free jazz and mixed with other stuff, Glimpse Trio comes to mind(but that's def not jazz or free jazz, but it's got that thing about it), they have an ace drummer named Hamir Atwal that plays in several other free jazz outfits.

See it a lot in hotels and small venue's - piano/drum combo's or sax/drum combo's.

Since you're into this type of music... does "Dearly Beloved" by Coltrane count as free jazz? I love that type of sound. It's just the completely aimless sounding stuff that puts me off.

For reference, in case you aren't familiar with the song (skip to 6:20):

John Coltrane - Sun ship (1965) - YouTube

^ I'm just not into pretentious improv. I tend to like songs, with exception to some solo oriented and improvised stuff.

Sounds pretty free-jazzy to me!

True story:

Back in '87 I was a sophomore in high school. In a small town, pop. 6,000. High school had like 250 kids. Anyway, I was one of three people in my town that listened to hip-hop (among other genres). I remember during study hall in the library, a friend of mine who was a classic rock/metal fan telling me rap was a fad and would end up dying like disco. :p

To this day, I still remind him of that particular conversation.

I can give you the point on Levine, personally I like him for his vocal tone than his singing ability

With Dubstep I said it had the potential to be something more, not saying it's completely there yet. Hell, back in the early days of rap people thought the music was really limited and would be irrelevant after a few years. I'm pretty sure early rock and roll was seen with some disdain by big artists of their day.
