i don't like James Brown much
all his songs are usually I-IV-V progressions, and he shouts, not sing, with the really irritating grunts i only sorta like "Please Please Me" and "It's a Man's World" overrated |

His albums are unnecessarily long and drawn out, with the same shouts over jazzy instrumentals. Tone it down JB. |

I completely agree on both counts. I didn't like 'em in 1992 and I don't like 'em now. Didn't like Mother Love Bone either although I thought it was better than PJ. P.H.U.Q. is on my short list (meaning top 200 or so) of the greatest albums ever made. Ginger is an ungodly great producer too. |

As far as pop music goes, Katy Perry is actually quite competent. Taking "The One That Got Away" for even just lyrical value, it's actually better than a great deal of indie **** I hit up. There's something there.

For sure. And it could be partly me wanting to hit that, but I really think it's objective. Essentially, she tells a story with that track, and it doesn't whollly muddle the point into oblivion. I think of modern pop artists, Miss Perry may have some staying power.

She listens to Radiohead (at least according to that song) so she can't be all bad. |
