I am doing the Shuffle Play a lot lately. It is amazing how many tracks I am hearing that I have ignored for so long. "Shuffling" is indeed liberating, or at least hearing the "fresh" tracks is for me.

Nearly everything that is studied in modern society, is usually treated to an in-depth level and music is no exception.

Sub genres are also handy when you want to complain about a very specific type of music. I can say that I absolutely hate the soulless, sterile, derivative crap they call 'Modern Country' without running the risk of giving the impression that I just don't like Country in general, which I do.

On a personal level though, I like adhering to the 'Great Equalizer' of Alphabetical Order for my music collection. Putting Fred Astaire, Merzbow, The B-52's, Milanese and Hank Snow into the Carousel and hitting Shuffle Play is a great way to experience the depth and breadth of Music without getting hung up on classifications and genres, and that can be quite liberating.
Those VH1 documentaries are great for non-matal or semi metal fans and a great place to start, as they follow a historical context. Most true metal fans just find them annoying for what has been omitted and also what has been incorrectly classified and stated.

Was more leaning towards over-analysis than indepth analysis. I do think it's interesting discovering how profound music is, especially historically speaking.

You might even say that genre/sub genre classification lends itself to a more academic (Learning) appreciation of music, whereas, when you start to take a more holistic view, that appreciation begins to deepen even further. When I discover how a particular Martin Denny song directly influenced some work by the Residents, those kinds of obscure little connections are profound and a big reason why music is my favorite art form.

Both approaches are valid and I'm definitely seeing where one can lead to the other.

You know, my original remark was made with tongue in cheek, just playing the game of the thread, but this has turned into a pretty interesting conversation.

The most unpopular of my musical opinions is probably 'Oasis are ****'. My disdain for that whole Manchester 'lad' scene tends to offend people. It was largely responsible for conning upcoming acts into thinking that attitude and image was more important than the music, and in some part, is responsible for the state the industry is in today.
