The Housemartins had some big hits, as well as Aztec Camera "alternative" would be dream-pop like Cocteau Twins or whatever the hell Jim Thrlwell (Foetus) did |

I'm not saying The Housemartins are strictly "Alternative" I was saying they were "silly" and they were alternative to synthy 80s music being a guitar band. Alternative isn't synonomous with not being on the charts. I don't even think they really came up with the term until the 90s after Grunge threw up on the charts some hits. I think discribing pre-90s music as "Alternative" would be using it as a retronym. Wikipedia has listed the genre for the Coteau Twins as "Post-punk, gothic rock, dream pop, ethereal wave" not Alternative, The Housemartins are listed as "Indie" (sometimes Indie and Alternative are used interchangably in casual conversation - two sides of the same coin) and I didn't really consider The Escape Club as Alternative even though wiki has them listed as Pop-Rock and Alternative. The band split when Grunge, Post-Grunge and Alternative Rock took off in the 90s. America is so different then the UK where where people bleed ABBA in the UK - in America only one #1 hit. Same goes with The Jam (for example) many hits in the UK - small cult following in the US.

This is spooky, I was listening to the debut Cocteau Twins albums when I saw this. It sounds like the Cure meets Siouxsie and the Banshees and then meets a future Sinaed O'Conner. Good album.

"Modern rock" was a slightly narrower version of "alternative" that was a popular label 20 years ago.
And Cocteau Twins is overrated. The band's songs sound too much alike, and the singing obscures whatever meaning the lyrics have. |

You don't seriously listen to Cocteau Twins to experience the meanings of their lyrics. If so then you're the only member of Earth's population who does. Ranking the band's worth based on that criterion is unpopular for sure. You win this thread.

Listening to the debut record from The Buggles, I thought of another one that applies:
I think the one album Yes recorded with Trevor Horn as the lead singer is their best.
