In The US, since The 80's, a lot of sounds that are not hyped down the braincells, Corporate Produced, and not easy to sell to the Mainstream is called Alternative. Back in the day, it was also called "College Music" (or College Rock) as well along with anything filled with Jangly Guitars that was more fitting of CMJ (College Music Journal I think was it's full title) than any of the Rock publications or the main broadcasting day of the US division of MTV.

It's actually becoming quite popular (especially among younger folks) to decry the Beatles as mediocre or boring. Will they become my generation's Muzak? Horrors! I used to think not liking Sgt. Pepper as much as Revolver was controversial...
I used to take so much flack from my square friends for hating on corporate adult contemporary **** like Hootie/Counting Crows/Dave Matthews/Spin Doctors back in the 90's, but around here, more people agree with me than not. It's nice to know I'm not the only one. About the only other thing I can think of that might be considered an 'unpopular music opinion' around here is for me to admit that I think Radiohead are kind of Meh and I never really understood what all the fuss was about. |

I sort of agree. I think they have some very good songs, and I respect their willingness to try new things, but I've never been overly excited by any of their albums. For me, all of their releases fall into the category of "decent but not something I'll listen to more than a handful of times"—except for King of Limbs, which I've never heard, and Pablo Honey, which sucks.

Keep in mind, no internet streaming options in 1991-92 when SLTS was charting, and peaking at #6 in North America. Here are some of the other highlights from those years... (Everything I Do) I Do It For You, Bryan Adams Gonna Make You Sweat, C+C Music Factory (till you bleed) Unbelievable, EMF (OHhhh!) More Than Words, Extreme Baby, Baby, Amy Grant From A Distance, Bette Midler Right Here, Right Now, Jesus Jones Good Vibrations, Marky Mark and The Funky Bunch (Whalberg) Justify My Love, Madonna Joyride, Roxette Losing My Religion, R.E.M. Summertime, D.J. Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince Baby Got Back, Sir Mix A-lot Jump, Kris Kross Under The Bridge, Red Hot Chili Peppers (it wasn't all horrible) To Be With You, Mr. Big (yes it was) I'm Too Sexy, Right Said Fred Achy Breaky Heart, Billy Ray Cyrus (it really was) November Rain, Guns N' Roses Life Is A Highway, Tom Cochrane SLTS ended up as #32 for 1992... So when you compare SLTS and Nevermind to the albums featuring the crap listed above it kind of becomes a little clearer why it had such an impact on the mainstream and developed the reputation it has. Though to be honest I'm surprised at the popularity of the so-called 2nd gen grunge kids who all jumped onto the Nirvana train. Talk about missing the point. Monkey see, monkey do (I don't know whyYYYyyyyy) |

^I'll agree with that, they really don't do anything remarkable, jamming for 8 minutes gets old.

Some of Morrison's rants were okay and 'The End' works for me , but he was wildly inconsistent, and I think one thing that did them in was the heavy reliance on that electric keyboard and no Bass. Their stuff dipped into cheesy cocktail lounge music a LOT and it doesn't hold up very well.

Me: No, I don't like The Beatles. Person: Like... at all? Me: No. I don't like their music. I think it's dull and poorly written. Person: BUT THEY ARE THE GREATEST BAND OF ALL TIME. Me: So, they're the band you listen to the most? Person: Well, no... Me: ...
