I thought it was clear that he means fat people who like Kurt Cobain are unpopular.

But wouldn't that be a popular opinion? Certainly is at my house...

I like the band Embrace but I know they are crap. I just don't get it.

Here's one:

I'm so tired of hearing about The Shape of Punk to Come. It's not that interesting/creative/entertaining. It's simply a poor attempt at bringing progressive elements to hardcore punk... (something already done by Nomeansno about a decade earlier... and done better). All it is is your typical 90s hardcore album with generic vocals and "eclectic" parts amateurishly incorporated into the music (which is apparently supposed to make it "artsy" and "creative"). If you genuinely enjoy The Shape of Punk to Come, then that's perfectly fine, but don't pretend it's this significant and revolutionary release that so many people make it out to be... because it's not.

Also... I get this feeling that people think that by naming the album after one of the most important jazz albums of the 50s that it somehow makes it more "prophetic" and "avant-garde."

My response:

Alright... my pretentious rant is done for today... Stay tuned next week where I complain about how horrible I think Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion is...

I agree with all of that, although I have just listened to The Shape Of Punk To Come and enjoyed it quite a bit.

Also agree about MWPP, such an over rated album.

Unless you happened to be part of the target demographic and under 18 years old when it first came out and had yet to be exposed to much more than what was on the tv and radio. In which case learning about the album and its title should have been an ear opening experience. Hard to deny the revolutionary significance to the personal history of the listener.

Do people really still cite this album as truly monumental well over a decade later without ever bothering to learn about its extended origin?

i do quite enjoy The Shape of Punk To Come - i don't see any "revolutionary" elements but i did enjoy all that screaming

Merriweather Post Pavillion is fine, it's Strawberry Jam that I have problems with

The 'revolutionary' elements were the screaming and the atonal dissonance in regards to how they constructed their songs. Yes, people outside the mainstream heard it and shrugged because it had already been done before, but consider who their target was - kids who's idea of 'real' punk rock was Green Day, Fallout Boy and Good Charlotte. For at least some of those listeners you'd better believe it was a truly revolutionary moment.

I agree with both of these statements. The Shape of Punk to Come is enjoyable but hardly anything great. From its reputation, I was expecting something a little more original so the first time I listened to it I was a bit disappointed. A couple listens later and I was ok.

MWPP has grown on me quite a big since it was first released, so I finally gave Strawberry Jam a listen. Just like MWPP when I first heard it, I was not impressed at all. I just don't know if I have the patience to let it grow on me... Because it will probably take a lot.

I have no interest in Animal Collective, and not for lack of trying.
