And Radiohead? Why the hate for Radiohead? I know they are generally disliked in prog circles but I never understood why. They're undeniably one of the most creative bands currently making music.

I know some prog bands hate that some people think they are prog. But even if they are not prog what they're doing is certainly progressive (not always the same thing). You really telling me theres nothing you like about them?

As for Indie, I hate a lot if myself as anyone here will tell you, mainly modern Indie. But not all of it sucks. I think its kinda crazy to say it does considering how broad a term Indie is anyway. Theres some really good Indie out there. Since you're a prog fan you should at least check out some post-rock and math rock.
I can understand how contrary much "indie" is to the tastes of a diehard fan of prog. Also, I assume the meaning of indie here is more referring to the music that has its roots in punk/new wave. But the idea that that sort of indie is somehow not experimental or whatever is ridiculous. It just experiments in a different way. Prog with complexity, indie with simplicity and minimalism.

Tool, though, from the standpoint of rock/prog history, ought to be considered (at least as far as their 2/3 better albums go) as a good, even virtuosic, band within the genre. That goes without saying, in spite of my personal dislikes for the band.

I think as boo boo said indie is too broad to be pigeonholed with statements like simplicity and minimalism. I mean going back to its roots lets look at the Velvet Underground they we're a pretty intricate band in themselves. I think there was much more going on with them then you hear on Sgt. Peppers, that's not a put down to either I mean Sgt. Peppers is one of my favorite Beatles albums. That's just looking back at alternative's roots going through the ages tons of big bands have been fairly complex. I mean sure you have Pavement who are pretty straight-forward guitar rock band but on the other hand you also have The Flaming Lips (I'm talking Yoshimi, Soft Bulletin type stuff) they're very complex and considered indie. Plus there's bands like Battles who completely bridge the genres of prog/indie.

Yeah, My Morning Jacket and Flaming Lips are considered Indie (even though Lips are signed with Warner Bros) and they are not miminalist.

Nor would I call My Bloody Valentine simplisitc, same goes for post rock and math rock. 2 genres that share the duality of being both associated with Indie and Prog.

*says in middle school*
Linkin Park is probably one of the worst bands to ever come on to the music scene.

I agree with what you're saying - definitely if you take everything that is referred to as indie, it's way way too broad to pigeonhole with such statements. However, I think that when proggies attack indie music, they're generally referring to the more kind of simple bare basics minimal guitar pop/rock style of the 90s and current decade. This they seem to consider as representing all (or almost all) indie - which needless to say, is wrong.

It obviously dosen't represent all Indie but I see most Indie today as being either too miminalist (Sebadoh) or way too experimental for its own good (Animal Collective) or just plain unbearable crap (Deerhoof).

But I do like my share of indie. I have albums by Sonic Youth, Flaming Lips, Pixies, Slint, PJ Harvey, Wilco, My Bloody Valentine, Yo La Tengo, Godspeed You!!! Black Emperor, Pavement, Dinosaur Jr, My Morning Jacket, Arcade Fire, Elliott Smith, Neutral Milk Hotel, The Black Keys, Rilo Kiley, The Jesus Lizard and others.

Most of these artists are very progressive and inventive with their music. I know that being a prog fan I will sometimes be stereotyped as someone who only cares about the technical skill of the musicians, which sucks.

See, to me the experimentation of all three of those bands is one hell of a lot more interesting than any 90s/00s prog I've ever come across.

A lot of proggies scorn and belittle indie music for supposedly not being innovative or compositionally complex enough. I think the truth is entirely the opposite: there is much more creative and inventive experimentation within music within the indie scene of the last 10 years or so than there has been within either the prog or metal scene of the same time span.

anything written as a 'song' is meant to be reproduced and therefore a product.

I disagree. Prog was pretty MIA in the 80s and was just starting to come around again in the 90s. But even though its not often reported, prog is back and healthy again now. And I think theres a lot of great stuff now.

Indie pretty much ruled the 90s and was great in the 80s too. But I think Indie is way too overexposed now, and right now prog has a lot better stuff to offer as far as I'm concerned. The Mars Volta, Porcupine Tree, Ozric Tentacles, Spocks Beard, Flower Kings, Battles, Kayo Dot, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, The Fall of Troy, Godspeed You!!! Black Emperor, Isis. Overall this is a lot more interesting and musically stimulating to me than todays Indie scene.

HEY. Thats an unpopular opinion, good thing I posted that here eh?

So long as you're agreeing that whats known as indie and what is more than a sound to make dough is determined.

I don't think the Killers, who are good, are particularly adventerous but TV on the Radio is the most refreshing thing out there..."I was a lover" is a masterpiece.
