Shock lyrics, satanic themes, and toilet humor have no impact on the quality of a song. Neither does political relevance or sentimentality. Lyrics don't matter at all. They're not even the frosting on the cake, just the sprinkles.

Terence Hill, as recently confirmed during an interview to an Italian TV talk-show, was offered the role but rejected it because he considered it "too violent". Dustin Hoffman and John Travolta declined the role for the same reason. When Al Pacino was considered for the role of John Rambo, he turned it down when his request that Rambo be more of a madman was rejected.
Al Pacino = God

i don't even really care what the lyris are about in death metal or black metal

they all seem like extreme "cheese" to me

I look at the instrumental aspect of a song first, and then the lyrics later on (if it even has lyrics)... but I wouldn't say that they're irrelevant. After all, lyrics help add a layer of meaning to most songs...

Lyrics penned by bands such as Sortsind are anything but extreme 'cheese'.

I find it depends on the genre. For most metal, I don't even pay attention to what's being said. But for Folk? Definitely.

Good point. When I was thinking of the importance of lyrics in music, the first musician who came to mind was actually Leonard Cohen, a Canadian folk artist and writer.

i only really pay attention to Dylan's words

of course, in comedy music, you have to listen attentively to the lyrics to get the joke
