exactly. not just in American Idol, but in most of competitions. for instance here in the Philippines, Charice Pempengco lost against a cute guy who had average voice. but look at where Charice is now?
well, personally, my choice would be Adam Lambert's album. |

I suppose, logically, as far fewer singers win talent shows than take part in them you will find more good singers who weren't winners than were.

perhaps losing to a competition give these talented musicians to persevere and work hard and thus they become so successful than the winners who might have been thinking that the winning part is enough to land them a spot at stardom. sure they've won and became popular for that but the game does not end there, pereverance and continuing to foucs in enhancing their artistry should follow after that otherwise they'd be nothing.

does it matter, no matter who wins on AI and those shows, they only have a shelf life of maybe 6 months anyways.

I am talking about winners, the losers may have modest success. The better way to go for them is songwriting... if you are a good writer, you can sell lyrics to other pop musicians and make money... cause none of the people on American Idol have had the talent to sustain a career as a serious musician for more than a few months.
The ones who win, well it is boring stuff that seeks of benality to start with, so they will be forgotten as soon as they start.

There is more to those shows though when fully talking about the outcome. have to know some stuff about the inner workings of the industry, business, marketing... that stuff takes top priority on those shows, music is second.. always has been, always will be. I do not watch those, if I wanna see real talent that can go on and do something, i will just go to clubs and see the guys who have spent their whole life doing something great, but get overlooked cause of these AI puppets who corner the market.
