Black Moth Super Rainbow are better than The Flaming Lips.
MGMT are better than The Flaming Lips.
Animal Collective are better than The Flaming Lips.

I don't give a **** if the artists hate the term IDM, if I say "IDM" people generally know what I mean, therefore it should be recognized as a genuine label for that sort of music.

It's still a viable genre though. Albeit a pretty ridiculous one. "Intelligent Dance music" sounds so up itself, but as you pointed out when you hear it you know exactly what it is. Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Autechre etc.

Most of it is up itself. It's the kind of music I suppose that is more often than not quite simple but makes some people think they are sophisticated listening to it. There's definitely more good UDM out there than IDM but you won't find many who think themselves cool admitting it.

Yeah. I don't even think Intelligent Dance Music when I see IDM, just Eye Dee Em if that makes sense.

You mean you don't think it is actually that intelligent? If so, I would agree.

I think that's a little unfair, good IDM is far from simple. It can be some of the most evocative music you'll ever hear, but I have to be in a certain mood to appreciate it.

Tedious IDM makes me want to tear my face off.

Dark Ambient on a cold winter night when you're drifting off to sleep <3

Well yeh ambient is obviously about being evocative. Some of that can be good, when it is going somewhere rather than just trying to sound nice. But ambient leads on to more experimental music too whereas dance music to me is generally about fun in some kind of way and melody.
