the early 90s was a golden age
Milltown Brothers are ok. Golden age I think is going a bit far, but it was probably better than the rest of the 90s. The 80s was stronger as at least the whole first half was decent.

Just like if someone said "Punk was on the British Charts and not on American Charts during the 70s" there's no need to point out we all don't live in the US or the UK.

You make it sound like only a few critics liked Husker Du or REM, they had a fan bases too and there are many other post-punk and college rock bands that are worthy of mentioning as well.

And electronica in general had roots way beyond the 90s going back even to the 50s. The full indie scene didn't start in the 90s it started in the 80s.
The height of AOR, hip-hop roots, Independent labels were also in the 70's. Indie is short for Independent labels and even though the moniker didn't start to be used till later for a style of music there were independent record labels much earlier.

So what are we left with that is specifically 90s? Grunge? blah Even the roots of that were earlier anyway. Britpop? blah Overrated.
why doesn't anyone talk about synth-pop when talking about the 80s?

i mean some of those stuff were terrif - Heaven 17, Ultravox, ABC, Blancmange

and Kate Bush was at her peak in the 80s

The 80's, is my least favorite decade when talking mainstream, everything seemed overblown, and superficial in the mainstream 80's to me, apart from a select few... However, Underground 80's was amazing. So many styles that I loved developed during the decade. Same with most any form of entertainment and media during that time... the mainstream was mainly generic and inflated, and the underground was where things really started.

Same goes for the 90's for me, a lot of mainstream garbage, but a ton of underground stuff.

I'd take The Replacements and R.E.M over Nirvana or Soundgarden any day.
