Yep I definately know these albums and I certainly wouldn`t call them classic either. The only ELO album I own and like is "Time".

Indeed. Sometimes he went overboard with the intended fusion of rock and classical, and the late period stuff is just abominable (but to his/their defence, most of the established acts were as well by the late 70's and early 80's). But despite all odds, their earlier albums are swell, especially "Eldorado", "A new world record" and to some extent "Face the music" and the debut "No answer". With or without strings, Lynne's songwriting was top-notch and he was a nifty producer as well. The big slump came around 1980 with that Olivia Newton-John-featured piece of cowdung.

actually I have a soft spot for the later "objectively crap" singles like "Last Train to London", "Don't Bring me Down" and "Rock n Roll is King"

Eno and Bowie are overrated. Bowie's best album is his greatest hits.

How is Last Train to London 'objectively crap' (unless you just don't like disco)?

oh i love it - it's a pretty simplistic song, if you take away all the disco trappings and Lynne has been capable of better - seems like he just wants that mega-hit

Nothing wrong with a mega hit as long as it is a good song. I'd say it's just a different style, as long as it is good in that then that is all that matters.

i don't have a problem with its catchiness and melody, it's just a very simple song
