I'd say get Candlemass first, that album is intense and captivating and probably one of the best doom metal albums. If you enjoy those three then we'll see how you feel about Stoner metal, you don't have to be a pothead to enjoy it, but it helps.

edit:

and on that note 3,420 posts... dude.

Yeah, Opeth is probably the best band to start with if you want to get used to the growl. He sings just as much (if not more) than growls, and when he busts that out it usually takes the song to another level. It definitely helped me appreciate it.

I loved metal in high school, but sadly that included the horrendous nu metal fad. It fell out of my favor and only in the past year or so have I been getting back into it. I have a big thing for music that creates a lot of atmosphere, so black metal definitely gets it for me.

I always show fans of all types of music these guys:

The most Asian metal band you will ever listen to, I promise. Their progressions and overall style is covered with distortion, obviously, but if you listen closely and have some familiarity with Asian music it is clearly VERY Asian. Not to mention the erhu. I love it.

This song shows off the erhu:

How can you not respect a metal band that can pull this off:

Hate to break it to ya, but that's likely a fairly popular opinion.

I'd love to see your signature/links too, but the huge and obnoxious ones have caused me to block all signatures.

I hope Doom Metal is my thing, the description given sounds like it should be good.
Would you recommend starting with a particular one, or doesn't it matter?
I'll definitely get round to listening to all three, but only one tonight. I'll listen to the other 2 tomorrow. If not, I'll just start from the top.
I tried to suggest a couple of doom albums to you a while ago, as you said Black Sabbath was your favourite metal band, and I don't think you liked them. I recommended Pentagram's first album and I forget what the other one was now.

Hopefully you get on well with those three. Doom is my favourite metal subgenre.

The vocals can sometimes rub certain people the wrong way i feel, when it comes to Candlemass. But I do like that album, it's a good starting point for sure.

And I can vouch for being able to love stoner rock/metal without being a stoner, as i dont smoke. The weed may enhance the experience (i would assume) but it's definitely not necessary.

In an attempt to try and explain what it is i dont like about metal Ive found two bands that i do like that are metal bands, sounds abit skuwift i know but i do have a point.

Its the production on a massive amount of metal music that turns me off, the screamy and growly vocals do nothing for me most of the time, the drums often sound so over produced and the amount of guitar over dubs some metal bands use is a bit ridiculous. The end result is often a very very over produced track, sometimes a perfectly good song, ruined by production. I know this happens in all genres but it does seem more common in metal, why?

Sooooo.... heres a couple of tracks that are metal that i dont think are over produced and sound great for it.

I hope this helps a bit.

Gotcha. I don't think "overproduced" is the term you're looking for though. I think you mean "clean" because truly a lot of production effort does go into making a track sound dirty, raw and heavy like, particularly, the Alabama Thunderpussy song.

Judging by the fact that you like these two songs you might find there's actually a lot of metal you like, it's just more on the stoner/doom end of things.

I don't think I disliked them as such, I just don't think they grabbed me and kept my attention. When it comes to Metal I find myself drifting in and out of albums. I'll give Pentagram's first album another couple of listens.
I still have 2 of Loathsome's album recs to listen to. It's obviously not a bad genre, I'm just having a hard time finding something I really like. I do have a few Metal albums, but not nearly enough.

^Well, i'm not complaining that you didn't like them or anything, just saying that I tried to set you off down this road before and I don't think it was too successful. I figured that more traditional doom might be more your kind of thing. It still might be. let us know how the albums go down.

Thats the conclusion I came to as well. So you like dirty, raw metal with a tendency towards to cleaner vocals rather than guttural? Stoner rock and doom is probably your friend then, in that case.

But thanks for finally, finally, taking the time to explain yourself and put together a decent post. If you had done that a long time ago then we would know what the hell you were talking about!

I always revisit music, even if it was unsuccessful months ago - I'm always willing to give it another listen. A few of my favourite albums have become favourites because I didn't just forget about them, I re-listened. Maybe my search will be unfruitful again, but I can only try. I have 4 albums on my list now.
