All of it. The lyrics are fine, but the whole combination of the sounds and how they're played in a funky style doesn't do it for me.

Agreed, definitely. Though I would have place NEU! above Faust.

Sigur Ros are a bit crap, the music is alright but nothing special and the lyrics can't even make up for it because they sing in gibberish.
NO. NO. NO. NO.

if it wasn't for Beth Gibbons voice, portishead wouldn't be very good.
Now that I think about it, maybe. But I must say, underneath her beautiful voice is (usually) some equally beautiful instrumentals.

Ah, yes...the Portishead thing. I actually think neither Beth Gibbons nor Geoff Barrow would be very good without the other. Either one alone wouldn't be much, but together they whack you in the face with musical fusion.

Good point actually, I doubt Beth would be good on her own either.

have you ever heard Von? It's quite different from their later work but it's quite stunning. Jonsi sings with an even higher voice and the instrumentals are more hazy and their use of violins is a little more restrained.

Quite unfortunate that.

They're rarely funky these days.

I'm not the type to dismiss a band without hearing at least a handful of tracks, I gave them a legitimate shot, I really did. It just bores me to death, I keep waiting for the music to start and the intro to end, but it never happens. I can't really think of any use for it, musically or other wise. There's a fine line between ambience and nothing, I'm not sure what side of that line these guys are on...

considering you don't seem to be aware she released a solo disc a few years ago i think you prove your point

it's quite unfortunate that Beth was always forced to play the sad whispering girl role. if you can score live versions of 'Sour Times' you'd know she can actually project and has some serious range and power in her voice. too bad she was always neutered in the studio.

they pigeonholed themselves.
