Noise rock is immense when done well. Melt Banana still kick many heavier bands into touch easily.
The disregard for genre rules is a major pull for me. Who wants to follow a set pattern?

Sometimes I just want to listen to something loud, abrasive, chaotic & mental.
'Proper music' doesn't really cut it during those times.

It's interesting that jtwilliams mentioned contradiction about noise-rock as the reason he can't stand it. That contradiction is a major appeal of it, for me. The sound is ugly and beautiful, harsh but magnetic, it provokes ambivalent feelings and that's what's so great about it.
