I also consider the voice and instrument and I'll support the other side of this...I would much rather have vocals/lyrics in a song, music that is purely instrumental really doesn't do anything for me.

I can go either way, I love some music with very discernible lyrics that I can relate to, and I love purely instrumental stuff.
Often I do not pay attention to lyrics though and can enjoy something simply based on the sound of the voice. Because of this, I can hate an artist/band simply because of the sound of the singer's voice, regardless of how good the music may be. We have a thread for this...stop.
