you just don't remember how many times? or are you deflecting my question?

edit: also, they are so different i don't really think talk talk v slint is a valid comparison.

Why do I have to listen to it a certain number of times to meet your criteria? Around 4 times which means that I won't dig an album at all. 'Growers' kick in after the second or third listen. I am seldom fickle when it comes to what I like and don't like.

Meh, I didn't think they were that interesting, much better Factory bands, like Royal Family & the Poor. BESIDES YOU KNOW YOU LOVE ME.

don't get upset i was just seeking the answer to my original question. was it really that hard to give up? and yes, i agree, four times is certainly more than enough.

In terms of newer post-rock bands who exemplify the good qualitiies of the genre, Kayo Dot have to be up there with the best of them. For some reason I still haven't heard Maudlin of the Well though.

Slint's music excites me a lot more than Talk Talk's though. Talk Talk are a very good band who tried a lot of new and interesting things, and their music is excellent... but for me, their music lacks the personality that Slint's music has. It's unfair to compare these bands though as they were going for totally different things and have nothing in common except for being progenitors of post-rock. And I've talked enough about how Spiderland is definitely one of the best rock albums ever, no more about it from me!

Rofl. Upset? Hardly! Just answering your question and the comparison is valid because both Spirit Of Eden (Talk Talk) and Spiderland (Slint) are recognised as two polar ends musically that nevertheless shaped what was to become Post Rock.

Post Rock is a crap genre tag anyhow TBH. 80% of bands make what I would call Ambient Rock which is fine in a movie or a few tracks but bores the crap out of you after 3 songs. That's why I like bands that seek to stretch out from conventional barriers and try to do something different which was what post rock was supposed to be about.

BTW I didn't say I didn't like Spiderland, merely the fact that i think it's overated and I have heard better. Tis all opinion. The same as the last post mentioned Durutti Column. I really like them and apart from a jest in reply I will carry on liking them.

i suppose if you want to look at it from a genre perspective(and i agree post-rock is a pretty nondescript genre). i think the idea of 'genres' is good in the planning phase, but we have failed in our methods categorize music on a general scale. but from a musical perspective, like you said, they are polar opposites. thus, i maintain that a fair comparison can't be made.

Well again Post Rock by it's very definition is creating a new sound from old and bands that put a new slant on the traditional sound of Rock are to be welcomed and Talk Talk (totally by accident) created a subversive form of the traditional notion of the 4 minute song as did Slint but I prefer what Talk Talk did and their influence is what I like to listen to when I listen to Post Rock. Different strokes and all that.

I like Spiderland more than I used to but I still think Tortoise were better.
