well firstly, I CAN see the appeal of Muse. I'm not really saying their early stuff is awful, although most of it does bore me to tears. Some of the newer songs I've heard genuinely annoy me though, I just can't stand Matt Bellamy's voice in all honesty. Normally I don't have much gripe with vocalists, but that guy is one of the few that really grates on me at times.

To me Muse always seemed one of those bands that would be a good 'gateway' for young people who want to get into better music. By the time I first heard Muse I was already listening to a lot of different stuff, and they simply held no interest for me then and they certainly don't now. Maybe if I'd been 13 and I'd heard Plug In Baby then it would have been different, who knows. What I'm saying is, having been exposed to a variety of diverse music before I ever heard Muse, I had no interest in them when I finally did hear them... there are better bands out there (as I'm sure you'll admit considering what you've said above) and I would rather explore different bands and genres of music than spend my time listening to what in my opinion is a pretty sub-standard rock band. NOT awful, I'll take that back if I said that - just not at all interesting to me.

I don't think you can make such a sweeping generalization as to say that complexity is always better than simplicity. There's a plethora of amazing garage rock songs from the sixties that are fairly simple in their structure, and there are days where I'd take that sorta stuff over something like Don Caballero or King Crimson or Can, as much as I like those bands. I'm as big a fan of 'math rock' as anyone, but sometimes there's nothing better than some good, well written and relatively 'simple' songs like you often get from The Byrds or The Zombies or The Kinks and bands of that ilk.

If you like complex math rock btw, have you heard Yowie? They only released one album but it's some of the wildest math rock I've heard, the drummer again is amazing.

Well, I like complex music, like boo boo said, because it's more rewarding. Sure, if it catches you off guard it can be a little confusing but whatever. but, who said I don't like simple music? Boards of Canada is a fairly simplistic IDM duo, but they're one of my favorite bands (hence the username).

and no, I have not heard Yowie. Will check out, thanks

ooh! i have an unpopular music opinion!
I think !!!'s actually a good band. So what? the lyrics are horrendous and Nic Offer isn't a good singer but I like this band. I also like that their only reason to exist is to scare pasty little indie kids.

(this is another simplistic band I like, too)

True! Wouldn't want to meet the man but have to respect his skill.

Definitely he's got the weirdest between-song banter I've ever heard.
Huh.

Ugh, yeah. I can appreciate simplicity, though. If it's done right.

And Interpol is a terrible band.
Well, I've only listened to the first few songs off of their debut but they seemed pretty good.

I've never heard of !!! before. That wasn't bad, but it wasn't amazing, to sum things up.

do you think indie kids would appreciate the lyric: (taken from "down by the school yard") "EVERYBODY CUT, NOW SHAKE THAT BUTT!"

i don't think so.

oh, also, have I mentioned that this is a "dance punk" band? all they wanted to do was make people dance.

And Interpol is a terrible band. My mom listens to them. I used to like them when I was, like, eight but now they're boring.
ok, uhmm... since when are interpol and muse indie bands?
that's the over generic genre people ignorantly call "alternative" rock, muse isn't as bad as a lot of the other's but they butchered Nina Simone's Feeling Good, their version made me forgive Michael buble
