I mean why is it that the generic bands like atreyu, As I Lay Dying, and Killswitch Engage get all of the fame when actual pioneers of the genre like Zao are generally on heard of in the mainstream?

A lot of genres are like this, the successful bands are the ones that often dilute the rawness of the originals with some softening and tweeking for the general masses.

That is the unfortunate downside to the popularization of music genres... however, on the upside, many people latch onto to these diluted "popular" acts and explore the genre further and find the good stuff lurking behind the commercial hitmakers...

This is true. It's just metalcore is my favorite genre, so I'm just being a butthurt bitch about it.

That's ok!! We all have our misgivings about the popularizing of our favorite genres... it's generally a sucky thing, I must admit...

Avid music listeners like most on here would, but the vast majority of people can`t see beyond the popular acts anyway, and even if they did they probably wouldn`t enjoy them anyway.

I`m kind of glad about this, as the best kept secrets are usually kept for those in the know.

Screamo is a great genre but all the popular bands are terrible.

Why would anyone hate on that? It's a good album. It's not my personal favorite, but I think Aphex Twin is the kind of artist where fans would be all over the place as to what their favorite album is. My favorite is his EP Come to Daddy (mostly because that's what got me into Aphex Twin).
