I will admit that music enthusiasts do have a high opinion of him. I can totally understand why you wouldn't like him, though...he really is an acquired taste. I heard Real Gone before and liked a couple songs, but really wasn't impressed. It wasn't until Rain Dogs that he clicked with me. Even now, though, I don't play Tom Waits when I'm hanging out with people. Someone in the group will complain about it.

I'd much rather listen to Nick Drake or something, I never understood the Tom Waits appeal. Even Rain Dog isn't very good. I wonder why people seem to love the guy, his voice is crap, annoyingly so. And I'm someone who rarely gets put off by the singer's voice..

I think having music on between friends is always hard, you'll always get someone with shit taste.

I love people with interesting voices, and he uses his "crappy" voice to great effect. Other than that, the guy is a badass. He just does what he loves with no compromise.

I'd rather listen to a sedated moose making unbearable moaning noises because at least that would be more authentic than when Drake tries to emulate the sound of one.

Bitchy Drake was authentic. He made 2 albums and then he basically said I have one more left in me, after that I've given all I've had to give. (Even though killing himself REALLY meant that he'd given all he had to give.)

That's more authentic than making ten records just because you can.

Wire went through a significant evolution in just 2 years I'm not denying that. Pink Flag and 154 don't even sound like they're from the same band. Pink Flag is their catchiest and 154 is their most interesting sonically though it lacks strong melodicism. Chairs Missing is their best as it's the transition album and maries the strong points of those other two albums.

But Entertainment! is superior to them all and for the reasons that I cited.
See I don't have a problem with this at all.

Well at least not until the last line. I mean if you were comparing them to something like Blurt, Savage Republic or In Camera or any other post punk band who's sound was fairly adventurous then fair enough. I'd probably agree with you.

But Entertainment is one of the most one dimensional borefests I've ever had the misfortune of sitting though.
Funky Bass.... angular guitar.... left wing ranting .... more funky bass .... more left wing ranting .... angular guitar....repeat for 50 mins.

To suggest they had more things going for them than Wire is laughable, especially when you take into account the sheer amount of different stuff Wire have put out in various guises.

Tom Waits is equally authentic by continuing to churn out records 30 years later and not being a pussy. :P

Entertainment! has a distinctive style that the band never breaks from that's true. But it's a great style that they mastered. Wire made a great fun punk record in Pink Flag but there are better fun punk records than Pink Flag, and they made great art punk records in Chairs Missing and 154 but there are better art punk records than those.

And also I still hold a great deal of resentment torwards Wire for being the primary influence on the sh*tfest that is Art Brut.

What's better Art Punk than Wire?
