Compared to all the other bands you mentioned they did, 65-72 is their peak and for 8 years that's a hell of a run, they put out at least one more classic album (Some Girls) and a couple more good ones (Goat Head's Soup, Tattoo You) since then, though I won't argue it's pretty bleak after that point aside from a few good singles here and there.
The Remains were great but they made one album and disappeared off the face of the planet, their obscurity isn't exactly a mystery.

Nah, even Bigger Bang has some great tracks on it (like "Laugh, I Nearly Died", "This Place is Empty", "Rain Fell Down", "Streets of Love", "Infamy") It's just that the Stones aren't releasing one classic album after another anymore. As they grew older they started to release a bit more filler, but there are still gems to be found on every single album. Like, Voodoo Lounge isn't that good overall, but "Love is Strong", "Thru and Thru", "Moon is Up", "Blinded by Rainbows" are still amazing. Bridges to Babylon isn't very good overall, but "How Can I Stop", "Out of Control", "Saint of Me", "Anybody Seen My Baby" and "Always Suffering" are great. Steel Wheels is a masterpiece. Yeah, it would be better without "Hold on to Your Hat", "Rock and a Hard Place" and "Blinded by love", but these three songs don't take anything away from that album. Dirty Work isn't particularly good, but tbh hit does also have it's mood, and songs like "One Hit To The Body", "Too Rude" and "Harlem Shuffle" are always a great listen. And then when it comes to Undercover, well, yes, the album is pretty bad overall, but "Wanna Hold You" is absolutely amazing, while "Undercover of the Night", "She Was Hot" and "Feel on Baby" are still absolute gems. Sure, the overall quality of those albums isn't the same as Exile on Main St, Some Girls, Aftermath, Black and Blue, Goats Head Soup, Beggar's Banquet, Sticky Fingers, and such, but they're always at least an interesting listen with a couple of truly great songs thrown in for good measure. I for one, can't wait for their next album (coming out apparently next year) |

This one of the last decent songs I've heard, but I haven't heard them all:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcMQWfMTfJ8 I like to play it on St Pats day.

It is kind of fair, if you compare these songs to what you expect from the Stones. They just moved on.
I mean, "Continental Drift" is some weird psychedelic African ****, "Terrifying" is basically the Stones making a better New Wave song than most new wave bands, "Slipping Away" is a quintessential Stones' ballad, and there's so much more on that album, as long as you care to listen. There's a reason why the press and the audience felt like this is "THE" big come back for them back then. |
