Hm, interesting take. I haven't gotten that from my listens of either Soundgarden or Tool.

Nah. It's got plenty of legit great tracks but it's also got decent-to-middling songs that don't quite pop like they really should and also straight up bland fucking shite (both generally when they ratchet up the classic rock influence that only works some of the time). I don't know why radio stations insist on shoving "Black Hole Sun" and "The Day I Tried to Live" down my throat as good songs but they do and they can eat a dick. But "Fell on Black Days", ""Let Me Drown", Spoonman", "Mailman", and "Superunknown" are definitely stone cold brilliant. I qualify it as a flawed classic.

That's because they're about as similar to Zeppelin as Joy Division.

I'd rather listen to Superunknown than a Zeppelin album and I don't even have to weigh the choice.

Sí. Seems like the only similarity is loud guitars in an accessible context.

I mean I can't point to this or that that's clearly cribbed from Zeppelin but I definitely get a Zep vibe from Soundgarden. Especially with Chris Cornell's voice caterwauling over the proceedings as if he's clearly a fan of Robert Plant. It's not a 1-to-1 comparison or a ripoff but I definitely hear the Zep influence in a hard to articulate way.
