I think you've made a mistake, because AOTY 2017 was Native Invader:

80's metal was mostly cartoony stuff for adolescents and rarely* offers the dimensions that the best of the 90's, 00's and 10's metal does. Metal grew up and 80's metal seems, in retrospect, like an embarrassing "phase" it had to go through.

*: Did I say rarely? I meant never.

Because I think it's more musically interesting than basic ass 80's metal.

I don't think I can listen to 80's death metal ever again, especially. Thinnest musical foundation for a scene ever. Just sped up Slayer ripoffs with cookie monster vocals and ****ty drum sound.

Music is only interesting when it doesn't sound like **** though. Who cares about evolution when something evolves into tragic garbage. Tragic garbage that is also generally for adolescents btw I don't know who you think you're fooling.

The Human Equation is probably the only album I really liked from him otherwise I wouldn't even put their work near AOTY material. Especially since 2017 had way better releases than The Source.

Doesn't Aeryon have like 75 singers?

But most 80's metal sounded like garbage because of overuse of reverb and a weird lack of interest in low end frequencies (without which metal does not sound heavy).

But I'm glad 80's metal happened. Otherwise, we wouldn't have this today:
