Usually when I see someone making the separation in their "true metal" style it's with Load & Reload. I like the Black album too and can listen to Ride the Lightning just fine. I'm not super familiar with the rest of their work, though.

St. Anger did feel like it was their "we should pack it in" moment, which I guess isn't fair to say if I haven't listened to it. I just remember how much everyone trashed it, including people I knew who were big Metallica fans.
