Yeah true you do need a way to sift through them all, but you have no way of knowing if one you skipped over because the one next to it had a better cover would be one you'd be interested in. I would just say don't put too too much stock in them is all.

I look for a lot of music that is adjacent to a lot of really faceless, safe and boring music. So album covers actually become quite useful, since if for example a singer/songwriter type album has a really overlit, magazine-cover style, friendly, welcoming cover - it's almost guaranteed that the music within is designed to be bland, unintrusive easy listening. The albums that trick me are the ones that look really creative, but still turn out totally faceless.
Of course it's not an exact science, but it's not without merit either. Record labels do design covers with a target audience in mind, after all. Some kinds of covers reveal label meddling right away. |

I'd say its pretty even between an album I'd listen to just willingly and an album I'd listen to based on an album cover. Both ways tend to lead to either a really good album, or a really bad album. Though of course the only way to really know is to listen to it. But album covers can have an effect on the initial interest.

For example, I may want to produce toys to sell to kids 8-11, but they end up being popular with teens. Based on my business model, I should shut down everything, call it a failure, and start fresh on a new project tomorrow. |

All of the many album covers that don't fit so cleanly into a certain mold are what I tend to check out, since I can't "read" them from the cover. I remember getting the CD for the Carole King album "Love Makes the World" and thinking "uh oh, this is gonna be crap. I just know it." It looked like this: And it was exactly the bland, adult contemporary turd that it looks like. Her 70's albums both look like better music, and very fittinglyare better. Unpopular music opinion(?):
Paradise Lost is a really, really, really boring band. Sub par vocals, sub par compositions, sub par musicianship. Their high status in the world of metal is a mystery. |
