I've grown out of metal a bit myself and while I don't think I've reached the point of viewing it as boring, I am disappointed that I'm not being surprised as often as when I was digging into black and death metal.

I'm equally used to a bunch of things that I still like, so I don't think it's just an overdose or overfamiliarity. I think I want something else from music now. Most metal just feels like a big, grey blob of dull noise to me now. Mechanically going through the motions without much in the way of color, nuance or expressive musicianship. Sometimes, I still want to hear something loud and energetic, but it was never what I liked about it first and foremost. Of course, it's just subjective. Other people will find that a lot of metal speaks to them on a deeper level - and there's still some stuff that I don't see myself turning away from anytime soon. But overall, I'm just rarely ever "feeling it" anymore. Last edited by MicShazam; 07-12-2018 at 05:19 PM. |

This sounds like exactly what I was describing.

Well, I wouldn't describe my dislike of any other genre the same way. |

Have you more or less fallen out with a genre you once called your favourite aside from metal though?

But if I was being a bit crude about it, I could suggest that a main trait of metal is to be intentionally hamfisted. I think I'm experiencing some sort of disconnect with what the genre is actually about. Just look at how normal it is to have growly vocals these days. I don't want that. I want to get very, very far away from that, in fact. |
